there is a risk of a speed camera being on the stretch of road ahead

AFAIK this is the case. Signs can only be placed on a route (defined by road number) where speed cameras are used. The intent has never been to have a sign for each camera. However, it has been known for signs to be placed over a considerable length of a route when there is only one camera. I'm a bit out of date on this, so forgive me if things have changed.
  • A sign warning of a speed camera, when there isn't one (or even if there is one), is intended to slow you down. It's called "traffic calming". If the result is that you slowed down then you likely contributed to making the road safer.

I would suggest that this would be a justified defence to any accusation of "false advertising".

The sign has done its job if traffic speeds are reduced. We are considering these in our village :)
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • Speed camera signs have to be put as you enter a town/village/city where there is a speed camera as well. It may not mean that the sign is there and then there will be a camera in 200yards time, but they have to warn you that there is one in the area. If they didn't then people would say 'well there wasn't a sign telling us'!

Hope this helps a bit, but they are put up there because of the legislation.

I cannot see how you would lose money because or a speed camera sign which doesnt have a speed camera or how you would consider your a consumer of them.
By constantly slowing down and speeding up, slowing down and speeding up. And I don't mean going over the speed limit. I can be doing 45 in a 50m/h zone and I will instinctually slow down when I see that sign, then speed up again. Losing money in fuel and not good for the environment all that slowing down, speeding up.

A sign warning of something does mean its definite just possible!! I have passed signs saying old people crossing and there have been none, also deers , frogs , children , horses etc.
  • If you drive according to the road and weather conditions at the time you wont have any problems will you because you will be driving correctly and not over the speed limit. (Thats called Defensive Driving by the way)

On the subject of speed camera warning signs:-

I have always been a little bemused when someone gets "done" for "obstructing the police", if they stand at the road sign with a home made sign warning motorists of a speed trap.
Shouldn't the local council end up in Court as well ?
