I suppose I could but I'm always scared of being caught out, not having enough money to pay for shopping etc...

The joy of only paying cash is that it really does hone your budgeteering skills. You only buy what you need, especially in the supermarket and will find yourself buying less impulsively. I do speak as someone who had 14 tins of beans in the cupboard and bought more because they were on offer :o

Maybe try it for a week and see how it works for you?

Great to see you back on track Floozie. :T

I think paying off debt is a bit like Weight Watchers says about dieting: it'll only work if you plan.

For me it was essential to work out a menu plan for the month and do a big shop monthly based on the plan. That way I knew that I had food for everyone at every meal until next payday, come what may. Changes and substitutions obviously happened quite a bit.

I find that increasing the number of days I go to the supermarket increases the number of impulse buys and temptation and therefore money spent!

I buy milk in large amounts and freeze it if it's cheaper, and just buy a small amount of fresh fruit and veg weekly. Apples, satsumas and carrots keep well in the fridge. Bulk cooking and freezing works well too as I always have something in the freezer for those cba days.

  • Day 3:

Can't be bothered doing a money post at the moment. I've got gum /toothache, I've had two cereal bars all day and 2l of pepsi max because I daredn't eat anything and feel decidedly light headed.

    Today's spends:

£79.99 - DS1 main Xmas present (paid on Tesco CC for the points - don't let me forget to pay it off when I feel up to it)
£5.98 - painkillers for said toothache.

Forgot to take my handbag with me, so forgot to pay in a cheque, will try remember it today.

Pad: Day 3 of 1000 = £10 daily and £2.50 which I sent to school with DS2, but training was cancelled, so it came back home with him.

Try some soup/yoghurt/custard which will actually be better than cereal bars which could get stuck in the tooth and cause more problems.

    Feel better soon!!!

Hope you feel better soon. Have you managed to get an appointment with a dentist?

Hello all, not feeling very well. Got man flu. Have dragged myself off the sofa to come and update.

I finish my current job on 31st December (boohoo) and start the new one on 6th Jan. I was going to start the new one on 5th Jan, but after I had handed my notice in for 4th Jan and had all the confirmation, the new employer contacted me and asked if I could start on 6th Jan instead as she had to go to a meeting that she couldn't get out of on the 5th. I wanted to say "No, I can't afford to lose £60 by being out of work for a day" however I meekly said: "yes, that's fine!". So I am unemployed for a day.

Got paid today (I wasn't overdrawn this month - yay me) and was actually £1.72 in credit - get me!!!

However I have been putting Xmas Presents on my Tesco credit card (boo, hiss) and haven't finished yet.

Also have been padding every day! As you will see from the top of this page the Halifax Clarity Card was £3118 on 27th November, and today it stands at £2854 (with some money still to hit the account) so that's a reduction of £264 in 19 days!

The next six weeks will be a challenge. Today I received a full wage, and on 15th Jan I will get around £100 for two days with present employer. Then I wont get paid from the new job until 25th Jan, which wont be a full wage as I will only have been with them for a couple of weeks so it'll be end of Feb before I get a proper wage. So instead of padding everything to the Halifax Card as I have been doing, I will put a little bit each day into one of my linked savings accounts and just call it my living expenses fund, then I can dip into it when I need to. Anything that's left can pay the Road Tax at the end of Jan (£110) or get paid back into the Halifax Card. I will continue to PAD £1 per day though just so I don't get out of the habit and see what everyone is up to on the thread.

Money left after direct debits: £961.11. Day's to first wage from new job = 40

    Groceries@ £10 per day = £400.
    Petrol @ £6 per day = £240
    Remaining = £321.11 for everything!

EEEK it's gonna be tight! However at new job I do NOT have the spending opportunities that I do now (it's in a residential area where I work in town centre at the moment) and there's a canteen where I can get lunch for £1 per day so will do best to have as many lean days as I can.

Edit: Padded today £1 to Halifax, and £5 to savings.
