Cancelling a Pipex broadband contract?

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in (could someone please advise?) but I'm a student and we've just got Pipex 8MB broadband in our house. Unfortunately, the fastest speeds we've ever experienced is 0.59mb. Its rubbish. It goes down for hrs at a time too. Is there any way of cancelling this? Could we just switch over to another provider?
Thanks a lot,
Andy

I'm with Pipex too and on the same 8MB broadband service, but I only get about 1.5 MB. That has nothing to do with Pipex, but all to do with BT. The top speed I can expect in my area is 2 MB.
I never have crashes either, it is rock solid and has been for the 3 years that I've been with them.
It could be line problems you have.

hi backflip, the line appears to work okay with regard to phone calls. I've been reading some customer reviews about Pipex and it seems that many people as less than happy. Apparently they purchase cheap lines from BT wholesale which is causing a lot of the problems. I figure that if I switch to someone like AOL and its still rubbish then I'll know for sure that it is the line, although I strongly suspect its Pipex. Does anybody have any idea of cancellation fees etc?
Thanks,

IT could be that you are right, but it was a BT engineer friend who told me that in my partcular district I wouldn't get more than 2 MB, and that would be irrespective of which provider I was with.
I don't think there will be a cancellation fee, are we not on a month to month contract rather than an annual one ?

Andy,
First off, the fact you've just had 8mb enabled is the main reason you're not impressed with the stats - it takes a 'training period' of up to and over 10 days for the line stats to be sorted out and your line to stabilise. Frequent disconnections are commonplace during this time.
I've just left Nildram, who are now owned by Pipex.
I left because of the same problems as above, but as many on here have stated - it's not always the fault of the ISP, but a large number of other factors.
I left Nildram, and was getting a max speed test result of 1.9MB/s - on an 8mb line that was synched at 8mb.
Now, with Eclipse, and have seen no better - in fact slightly slower speed tests with them. Although, importantly, I'm no longer paying 25.99pm for the service.
Your only solution is to hope BT upgrade/improve your exchange, or goto a Cable provider, but wait it out a bit 1st.0 -

Hi
What router have you got? Can you get your router stats, have you tried plugging your router into your test socket, which is behind your master socket, to see if this improves your connection, you should not be getting disconnections, so I would have a look at your wiring.
A lot of things can influence what speeds you get, congested exchange, your isp throttling/traffic shaping, your telephone extensions, filters etc.
Pipex are not doing very well at the moment, since they took over f2s, nidram, which use to be excellent isps, by the way, and which are now going downhill fast.
You only have to look at their forums, to see many unhappy customers.
Go and do this bt test, just put in your tel no, then your username that your isp gave you to put into your router to connect to your broadband account.
This will give you your BRAS Profile, The data rate is set in your BRAS profile and is simply the maximum speed at which you can download at.
EDIT:
My router synchs @ 7360, which gives me a BRAS Profile of 6000kbps, and my download speed reflects that.
Sync BRAS Profile
288 - 575 250 Kbps
576 - 1151 500 Kbps
1152 - 1727 1.0 Mbps
1728 - 2271 1.5 Mbps
2272 - 2847 2 Mbps
2848 - 3423 2.5 Mbps
3424 - 3999 3.0 Mbps
4000 - 4543 3.5 Mbps
4544 - 5119 4.0 Mbps
5120 - 5695 4.5 Mbps
5696 - 6239 5.0 Mbps
6240 - 6815 5.5 Mbps
6816 - 7391 6.0 Mbps This is mine
7392 - 7967 6.5 Mbps
7968 - 8127 7.0 Mbps
8128 7.15 Mbps
