Just as a follow up question to this one, my car was unfortunately stolen 10 days ago. Insurance co wants keys and V5 which I don't have a problem with. What I do have a problem with is they want the original purchase invoice when I got the car. I don't want them to have it as they don't need it from a legal standpoint and don't see why they should know what discount I managed to negotiate on the original purchase price.

Anyone with any thoughts on how to progress?

If you haven't got it (how many people keep receipts?) you cannot give it, period, they cannot argue with that.

I'm wondering why they want it too? V5 and keys I can understand...but like I say, if you haven't got it, just say you don't have it, they can't argue with facts.
  • Agree figures with insurers then send documents, not before as the vehicle is still your proprty.... not theirs.
The insurer should agree to send a cheque in full settlement as soon as documents/keys are received, suggest these are sent recorded delivery.
  • Car is/was 21 months old. I'm a company car opt out and got it on a PCP via a broker. Needless to say, the purchase price was a good discount from list price and something tells me they will try to take this into account if they get their hands on the original receipt. As far as I'm concerned they should pay me what it is worth regardless.
  • Probably because the OP has only had the car a short period of time and they want to verify the price paid for the car; potentially to make sure it isnt a scam involving buying a heap/scrap job and claiming it as a full value when stolen.

If you have just bought it recently I don't think "not having it" will get far.

Understand your point but surely the original V5 will demonstrate that I have had the car since new. They will be dealing at some point with the finance co so they can verify how long financed etc.

I think I'll hold on to it and wait for them to make contact and take it from there.

They tend to like the receipt so they can make sure everything adds up, this is especially the case with theft claims.

The receipt might in some circumstances flag up issues such as it being bought by a young named driver on the policy (Which could indicate fronting) and they can check the V5 matches up with the purchase date etc.

I would recommend you give them the receipt (Or a copy), if you don't it could delay your claim and could flag it up for more investigation.

The Insurers will give you the market value of the car immediately prior to the theft which is not affected by the price you paid.

If your worried about the receipt affecting the value, have a read of the forth paragraph of section 2 of this link http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/technical_notes/motor-valuation.html#13 While your at it, have a read of the whole link, as this is how the Ombudsman sets out how an Insurer should value a stolen / written off car and deal with the whole situation

I have read that some logbooks are being stamped or printed with details if the vehicle has been written off before.
Maybe they have reason to believe yours has or check to see it has not?

I understand why you are concerned but you have little alternative but to give them what they ask.

Some companies are helpful and settle claims without a drama and others are not so good. Unfortunately you only find that out after you make a claim.
