Hi All you MSE
I was wondering if you could help me. I recently had a car stolen and the insurance company are being a pain. They are asking for the v5 documents to do a valuation on the car. Is there any need for them to have the originals?
After all I wouldnt give my keys and v5 to anyone and then say ah drive it for a bit and then decide what money you want to give me for it. I would get the cash first then hand over the documents.
I have said that they are more then welcome to have copies for their claims department but apparantly this isnt good enough. I asked why they need the originals and the answer was "because we do!" Not good enough in my books. I have a feeling this is going to be a long drawn out process. So glad I have a second car!

Most insurance companys ask for the V5 following a total loss, mainly because they will become the legal owner once the claim has been paid. If the vehicle is recovered its theirs and need to complete the relevant paperwork0

See this is my point they havent paid a claim nor even given me a price so why should I give them the v5?0

Someone must be the first to craack. At the end of the day it'll depend on if you want the money more, or if they want to pay more.0

It is normal procedure to ask for the v5 documents when a vehicle is stolen, its is also quite common for the insurance company to ask for the keys.
I would not worry about it. Take copies of everything they have asked for and send them by registered post.
Its very stressful when you have a vehicle stolen, you have my sympathies.I am an Insurance & Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. If I remember correctly, I once made a fault claim and car was deemed not economical to repair. Settlement figured agreed, I think settlement letter came then ask me to post all the docs and keys etc, they then pay out as agreed. I dont know why you should need to send them that as they haven't settle a sum with you and no letter to confirm the details.0

They want to check you haven't given the car away, complete with V5 and keys. "Given Away' being that the car hasn't been stolen etc. its their way of checking I guess.
I'd just give them the documents, otherwise they won't pay out. Car has been stolen, they are no longer any good to you, but there again, if the car is found, you no longer have them. I do see your point.0 -
You have a simple choice. Keep the documents and not get paid. Send them the documents and get paid. Up to you.0

Correct - and also to make sure the Reg Doc is not a forgery with dates / previous owner numbers etc changed.0 -
i guess the main thing is to check the car did actually exist and was yours
I could insure someones car over the phone and phone up 2 months later and says its been nicked and take the payout its been done over and over again.0 -
Just as a follow up question to this one, my car was unfortunately stolen 10 days ago. Insurance co wants keys and V5 which I don't have a problem with. What I do have a problem with is they want the original purchase invoice when I got the car. I don't want them to have it as they don't need it from a legal standpoint and don't see why they should know what discount I managed to negotiate on the original purchase price.
Anyone with any thoughts on how to progress?0
