Driving another car with owners permission

My insurance says I am covered to drive any other car with the owner's permission. My son is abroad but I have use of his car. However my son's own insurance has now expired so that car is not covered specifically on any policy. Am I still covered to drive it on my own insurance under the 'driving other cars' clause? The car is taxed and MoT'd.
(I suspect the answer is no but then if that is the case, whose policy would I put the claim through if I had had an accident while my son's insurance was still active? Presumably my own as I am not covered on his. Therefore why shouldn't I be able to continue driving it under my own insurance cover for 'other cars' even though his insurance has run out?)

You can drive it, but can't leave it parked on a road/public place.0

No you can't drive it! I bought a new car and rang the local police station to ask them the same question and they said that the car that is being driven has to have some sort of insurance of it's own.
So I had to orgainse temp cover to drive it home until I managed to swap my insurance over

The car must have its own insurance! If it does then your insurance will only cover you TPO......0

Would that be because it was your car, not one belonging to someone else? However, in a similar situation a couple of years ago, I asked the police and after some discussion, was told that each vehicle has to have its own insurance policy on it. My insurers told me I would be covered on the other vehicle, but 3rd party only. Not much help, I'm afraid - maybe better to err on the side of caution?0 -

It isn't the same question at all!
You cannot make use of DOC extension to cover you when you are driving another car owned by you.
The OP is driving someone else's car!0 -
I believe you are insured to drive it.
But because it doesn't have it's own insurance you cannot leave it on the public highway uninsured whilst your not actually driving it.
If you are going from one driveway (private) to another driveway then that's fine, but you can't stop for any comfort break or anything else, so it's only really going to work for a short journey from one house to another with private driveways.0 -

No. The car does not have to have its own insurance unless it is a condition imposed by the DOC extension. (Though as already posted if the car is uninsured you cannot leave it parked in a public place).
And using your own insurance's driving other cars extension is always TPO irrespective of whether or not the car you are driving is insured in its own right.0 -

You will be covered TPO whilst the vehicle is being driven. If you park it up on a public road its not covered.

If your sons insurance was still active there would be no cover unless you were a named driver on your sons policy as it would only fully cover drivers named on the cert.
Your ins would only cover damage against TP`s.
Therefore why shouldn't I be able to continue driving it under my own insurance cover for 'other cars' even though his insurance has run out?)
You would get pulled every 5mins by ANPR cars0 -
If his car is not insured then no-one can drive it.0

Not so, and bad advice.
Anyone can drive it if they have the owner's permission and are covered for driving other cars.
(As previously posted, unless there is a condition in the DOC extension saying the other car must be insured in its own right)0
