Induction or gas on glass?

Having new kitchen fitted soon, had decided on a black glass induction hob for a change, 'economical' easy to wipe clean etc, however Ive just heard that although they are percieved as 'economical' as it only heats the pan (ie no flames/heat loss at the sides etc) £ for £ they they are much more expensive to run and can guzzle electricity!!
Ive now had a panic!! googled and found some 'gas on glass hobs' which may still give me the easy clean im looking for, but will not run away with my electricity bill.
I totally don't know what to do now, and need to make a good (and quick) decision, because I should really have ordered already!
Anyone have any experiences? Are inductions expensive to run? re gas on glass still easy to clean?
Any help gratefully recieved!
Thank you.

Cooking on gas, energy unit to enrgy unit is allegedly cheaper than cooking with electricity in the UK.Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

I don't know if my calculations are right here, however, according to wikipedia...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induction_cookerAccording to the U.S. Department of Energy the efficiency of energy transfer for an induction hob is 90%...Cooking with gas has an energy efficiency of about 30%, plus distribution losses leading to an overall efficiency of around 27.9%.
So if we want to put 1kW of heat into the food, the cost would be...
@12.75 pence per unit of electricity, require 1.11 units = 14.2p
@3.68 pence per unit of gas, require 3.58 units = 13.8p
(prices taken from ebico's flat rate tariff for my region)
So on the face of it, there's not really anything in it? (remember though, wasted heat from the gas hob would actually be lost into your room - so is effectively heating the house rather than just "lost").
Your induction hob will probably be more expensive to buy in the first place so I think your decision should be on other factors rather than the cost of running it - like will you need to replace all your pans - thats extra cost.
Personally I went from gas to induction, and wouldn't look back. Its so easy to clean, and doubles up as extra work space when not in use - or rather any rings that aren't in use. Its also safe as it turns itself off when a pan is removed and not replaced, and has the timer function. I find it more controllable than gas, and quicker to heat up - water boils up in no time.0 -
I'd vote induction. Got one recently and really like it. The heat is really controllable and very consistent. No sudden boil overs from the spaghetti when you look away!
And not hot, so it doesn't get burnt marks from spills. Not 100% of the time (if the spill gets under the pan, the contact between pan and hob can burn a little) but generally excellent.0 -
Induction all the way! Really controllable, and extremely easy to clean. Most importantly it is safe as the hob only gets residual heat from the pan and the ring switches off when you remove the pan.
Mine has a timer function for each ring and a lock button to prevent any accidental changes.0 -
I have a Neff gas on glass hob and I hate it. Absolute nightmare to clean, plus the pan stands are very high off the worktop making it uncomfortably high for me to use at only 5 ft tall (the pan stand is actually level with my bra underband so I almost have my face in the saucepan if I am cooking a large pot of anything and need to look into the pan)
I have a single cheap induction hob bought from Lidl, still too high off the worktop for me but so good to use that I have a proper induction hob on my wish list for when I can afford it.0 -
Induction all the way! Gas is so ... primitive ...0

Wow, what a brill reply, just what I needed!
Initial outlay is quite good, as the best designed one (in my opinion) for clarity and button position is one from ikea for £299!...

Pans? Ive had mine for years (cheapo stainless steel ones), so guess im due for a change anyway! Also until ive researched to get just the ones I want, ikea has come to the rescue again, as they do an induction comptable set for £5 !!

Thanks for your reply!0 -
Thanks for all the replies, im swinging back to induction again now! Just got the wobbles as I thought I'd misunderstood the write ups about runnung costs!
Ie yes its 90% efficient with heat transference, but it will cost you say 50ps worth of leccy to boil a pan of spuds, but even with wasted gas, I thought maybe it might still only cost 5p in gas to boil the spuds. IYSWIM.
Yes I had noticed that the pan rests on the gas on glass do seem high, and some of them are really small too, I can just imagine them teetering precariously and I would get paranoid about them tipping off!0 -

Hi
How did you work that out?Sealed Pot Challenge No 089-Finally got a signature.:rotfl::j0 -
I've had this one now for a couple of years, bought back when it was £449. Also a good price as it includes a five year warranty. I wound up getting the Tefal preference range of pans. Debenhams do them in their 25% sales all the time. They're induction compatible, dishwasher proof and none-stick. There aren't many that tick all three boxes.Initial outlay is quite good, as the best designed one (in my opinion) for clarity and button position is one from ikea for £299!...0
