I read somewhere last week that councils were looking into using sugar because it did the same as salt but was cheaper.... so if you were in a real bind you could try that...
We too have a grit bin in our street, everyone is very good and only takes a bucket or two as needed.:DMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Great to read of someone who actually bothers to clear their path to make it safer for callers.
Last year in the snow, i was doing visits to homes and many a lazy b'stard couldnt be bothered to snow clear the path to their homes thus making my visit hazardous.
I wonder if i could refuse to visit ('elf n safety) or make a claim should i slip/injure myself?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

it could be construed that they did not do a good enough job of it whereas a path that has obviously not been touched makes it clear that it is for use at the users discresion

By clearing their path, a householder is actually more liable to lose any claim against them

B&Q sold some last year.
I often found that if i cleared the path, it made it worse the next day as it was freshly covered in ice.
If i left it, the snow gave grip underfoot.0 -

clear the snow
scrape it with the shovel
brush it with a yard broom
salt/grit it
then after a while re sweep with the yard broom0 -
£5.99 a bag at B&Q, £6.99 a bag at Wickes and Homebase, £4.99 a bag at ASDA I believe. Local builders merchants will probably also stock it.
We went to Wickes where it was £4.50 for a 25kg bag which had a slit split in but they had put inside another bad and hadnt lost lots of weight
I thought B % Q didnt do them as they werent on the website and couldnt get any from AsdaNeeding to lose weight start date 26 December 2011 current loss 60 pound Down. Lots more to go to get into my size 6 jeans0
