Where to buy a bag of salt for gritting?

Stupid question - where do you buy salt for gritting from? DIY sheds?
We moved into a new house in August. The drive (right across the width of the front of the house - no front lawn) is that concrete made to look like block paving with an imprinted pattern (not nearly as vile as I just made it sound!). Great, low maintenance, but slightly slippy even when wet so ice will be a nightmare. Add to that the fact it slopes steeply.
So, where do you get salt from?! Or will a bag of sand do the job?

Hi teapot,
don't do sand it will just freeze.
You can get bags of grit from B&Q (type places), most garden centres, or possibly slightly cheaper your builders merchants such as Jewsons, Travis Perkins and the local independants
Stick a small amount on a hand shovel and 'flick it' to ensure a light and even spread (and you don't just waste it)
The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D
Don't like what I have to say? Call me on 0800 KMA;)0 -
Thanks for the advice. :beer:0

Hi Pinkteapot
I was at the local garden center yesterday and they were selling bags of special salt to de-ice driveways etc with x0 -
The product you are looking for is Rock Salt.0

£5.99 a bag at B&Q, £6.99 a bag at Wickes and Homebase, £4.99 a bag at ASDA I believe. Local builders merchants will probably also stock it.0

make sure you get it quick - last year they were permanently sold out. I've not got mine but will be doing that tomorrow.0

My local Co-op is selling bags (I can't recall the precise name of the product but it's some kind of grit/salt for de-icing) for £3.50 each. There was no weight given on the bag so I weighed one at home and it is just over 11kg. I think there are places that sell it cheaper but the Co-op was handier for me.0

We got a big bad from CostCo the other day for about 2.99 + VAT. If that's any help :-)0

Also at a push Cat litter (the cheapest you can buy) come in handy if you can't get hold of any salt, stock up now though as shop will be running out soon:AWhatever it is - I didn't do it!:A0
