Bought some Seville oranges today to make marmalade. First time in my Tefal - although made lots of lovely jams in the summer. Many of the oranges are quite green. Is this normal? Are they safe ?0
-
Where did you get the Saviles haven't seen any yet0

Tinge of green can be normal. Although not necessarily organic Sevilles are some of the least interfered with fruit - not waxed and not pre sorted by the wholesalers and supermarkets so that mis shapes and odd colours are rejected.
If you ever see oranges for sale in markets on the Greek islands, for example, you'll see that perfectly ripe oranges sometimes still have a little green left in their skins.0 -
Thank you for your reply. Seville oranges are out in Tesco for £3 per kilo. I got mine in Waitrose for £2.49 per kilo!0

Thanks for the reminder - must pop to the farm shop tomorrow :T

My dad has offered me an old brass jam pan (excellent condition) for my jam and chutney making but I am not sure if I can use it on a gas hob. Does anyone knowI am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order

I also saw them in Tesco's yesterday evening for £3 for a 1kg bag but the shelf edge label was slightly confusing: £3.00 / £2 per KG. Shop assistant didn't know which it should be and said he'd have to flag it up to head office. I'm off to my local market usually much better value for veggies and fruit than supermarkets0 -
I'm pretty new to preserving so may I please ask what others think of the 'mamade' cans of pre-prepared seville oranges? It's £1.49 in Tesco for a can sufficient to make about 6 pounds and it does look like it would be easier but I don't know if the finished product will be as good ?Nothing in it, nothing in it but a ribbon round it .....0

Yes Lucy I would be interested in knowing the answer to this too....0
