The things starting with O16 - DPF will just download again if you go to the website which generated them - if you know you'll need them again, you can leave them.
yes leave cleanmem, it will free up memory every couple of minutes, which helps prevent swapping (which is the main cause of slowness in low memory machines)
could you also post a list of services running by
start, run cmd
in the box that comes up, type
net start
and post the results (you can mark, then copy and paste by clicking on the top left hand corner of the cmd prompt box)!!

Thank you!
I'm struggling a bit......can't seem to find a few of the things in Autoruns to untick?
Ctfmon, dwtrig20, hmv and a few others?
I am using the search tool.0 -
ok, use hijackthis - but remember to tick the ones you are trying to remove, rather than untick!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
cleanmem comes along with a little program called mini-monitor, which is useful in keeping an eye on your available ram when you run things!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
THANKS! I feel like an IT expert now!! Not!! :rotfl:
It's now come down to:
Total 418308
Peak 439608
I have opened the mini monitor you suggested, it will be really useful as I can then keep my eye on that to give me an idea what I'm using to see whether more ram would help.

how is it running and booting now?
Are those figures immediately after booting, or after you have loaded firefox/thunderbird etc?
do you use windows messenger, windows search, windows live login, belkin wireless adapter, windows networking to access files on another machine?!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
It's definitely running and booting faster now.
Those figures are with Firefox and thunderbird running which is what I have most of the time. It's seems to be on average 58-62% at the moment on the mini monitor.
I use the Belkin thing I'm not quite sure which is which but I have a belkin wireless keyboard & mouse and a Belkin USB wireless broadband adapter (I'm guessing it's that one?)
I use messenger occasionally but I don't use windows search and I don't think I use windows networking thing is it to access files on another pc (as I don't have access to another one) or a USB stick or something like that?
Thanks again :A0 -
if you go into task manager, processes, tick show processes for all users, then click view select columns, and tick peak memory usage, you can see which processes are using the most memory, clicking the column header sorts them numerically
You can disable these services by running services.msc
Network Location Awareness (NLA)
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
WebClient
Windows Search
is the terminal services service set to manual?
use autoruns to stop messenger running at startup (ie untick it)
tick and fix these using hijack

if you click on the minimonitor, you can set it to start at bootup
run ccleaner to cleanup temp files, and that's about it
then backup!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
firefox can be a bit of a memory hog especially with plugins, try the same webpage in internet explorer, and compare memory usage in task manager!!

Just catching up on here, but I've got to say this is the way all threads should run.
This is not meant to sound condescending but,
catlou, you said 'I'm not very techie' but you listened (read) to advice, followed instructions, reported back and the problem was solved.
And your knowledge has increased.
What a contrast to some of the other threads running at the moment.
Well done all. :beer:Move along, nothing to see.0
