Thanks gonzo127
I will probably have a go cleaning it if I add memory as I would be opening it up anyway then. Will have a think if there's anything else I would be gutted if I lost re the backing up.
I have now done everything suggested by Closed and have just looked at the figures in Task Manager now they are:
Total 474896
Peak 504084
That looks like a big change to me? What do people think?0 -
much better, post a fresh hijackthis log for final tweaking suggestions, it could go much lower, (once it goes below 448000, it should start to speed up noticeably)
how is it running now, any faster? Booting any faster?
update malwarebytes and do a full scan to make sure there is nothing lurking.
burn your photos to dvd as well, multiple copies, flash drives are easy to corrupt/break/lose.
to register avast, right click on the icon near the clock
install cleanmem (download from mirror1)
http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem
disk imaging to an external hard disk (as well as dvd's for photo's) is the best way of backing up, and getting back to a fully working system should it ever fail to start/get infected etc!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
wait and see, my commit charge never goes over 448, and currently stands at 120MB, with browser and virus scanner!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
Thanks again closed & everyone it is much appreciated.
I think it does seem to be running faster.
I have updated and ran Malwarebytes it didn't pick anything up.
I have installed cleanmem but I'm not quite sure how it works!is it something that I need to run myself or is it running in the background doing it's own thing?
If I was to buy an external hard drive like this : http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/9752934/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-320GB-2-5-inch-External-USB-2-0-Hard-Drive-Black/Product.html?_%24ja=tsid:11518|cat:9752934|prd:9752934
is there an easy program to do the "disk imaging" that would say copy everything including emails, browser bookmarks etc. so that like you say if anything went wrong it would be really easy to set up again?
Here is the hijack this thread now too:

you're gettin' there
To give you a good idea, I'm still running a Semperon 3000+, and with 2GB RAM in it, and finish cleaning up how it runs, you'll really feel the difference from when you started this processMine boots in a minute and shuts down in 12 seconds - I'm not quite up there with closed's system, but it still knocks spots of my MIL's vista pc with a faster processor
......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
cleanmem should have setup a scheduled task to run in the background, go into c:\windows\tasks, clean system memory, schedule, advanced, and change the cleanmem frequency from every 30 mins, to every 2 mins
If you buy a seagate drive, this free software does the disk imaging (which does the whole lot, windows, programs, and data), but always make a third copy of the really important data on dvd too.

still got the nokia software running, and ctfmon (control panel, regional and language options, languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok), and googleupdate
using AUTORUNS again (not hijackthis), untick these

then reboot, and check commit charge before loading anything else
note hijackthis works the opposite way around to autoruns, which is why you need to be careful what you tick and untick, and which program you use.
unticking something in autoruns stops it running at startup,
ticking something in hijackthis, and then doing fix checked delete's the entry and file.!!

is there an easy program to do the "disk imaging" that would say copy everything including emails, browser bookmarks etc. so that like you say if anything went wrong it would be really easy to set up again?
I use DriveImage XML. It makes an image of the whole disk. I've restored 2 PCs with it (once due to actual disc failure, the other due to an upgrade to the disc) so I know it works properly.

Thanks - that's really good to know!0 -
Thanks again Closed & everyone!
I have changed the cleanmem settings do I just leave it on my pc like that now permanently?
Stupid question.......please bear with me! So I am working my way through unticking the things you pointed out in Autoruns I won't miss any of them will I? Most of them mean nothing to me I just mean the things relating to say ebay, facebook, hotmail etc won't make any difference to me using them will they?
I thought I had got rid of the Nokia thing there was a windows nokia something in Add/remove programs and I uninstalled that and it's gone. It's a weird one as I haven't had a Nokia phone for about 8 years way before I had this pc - confused!
Also similar thing with the HMV downloader one, I uninstalled HMV ages ago but it's obviously still on my pc somewhere?0
