Return of item after getting refund

Hi All,

I got refund back from ebay today for an item of around £15 which I was sold as new but was used infact. The seller really proved horrible, no reply to my messages, had to report to ebay, even then only denial and foul language. Ebay simply refunded my money after I escalated it to customer services, withut any conditions. Now, the seller contacts me politely asking to send him the item.

After this distasteful experience, I want to give away the item on free recycle or to some charity. I don't feel inclined being nice with this guy who is a fraud and utterly disrespectful.

Where do I stand. Do I simply ignore his message or message him to arrange the pickup of the item as I cant take time to go to post office even if he pays me the postage in advance.

Thanks

  • as it stands, you have the money and the goods - the goods aren't yours to dispose of (afaik) ... you must return it to the seller. By all means ask him to arrange collection - but do you really want him to come to your door?

OP was refunded by eBay, so the seller still has their original money anyway. This is a refund out of eBay's own pockets - a good-will payment - and hasn't come from the seller (otherwise the dispute would have proceeded and the buyer would have had to return the items to the seller to get the money).

Seller may not realise this has happened, hence the contact.

  • Ebay really don't seem to communicate very clearly about these 'no fault' refunds , either to the seller or the buyer, leaving everyone involved a bit confused
  • sorry must have misconstrued what OP meant.

  • Thanks guys for your replies. Now, I am confused too, if it is an ebay good will refund or the seller is again trying to be cheeky.
This is what I got in my ebay messages this morning,

"Good news! We issued you a refund of GBP XXXX on Nov 24, 2010 to the PayPal account you used to purchase this item. The refund includes the purchase price plus original shipping. Please login to Paypal to get your refund."

Ya, It is not for me to hold his item unjustly, but I am not kind enough to do him a favour either. I will ask him to arrange for a pickup, he lives only a few hundred miles from me only.

It won't be an ebay good will refund, they will have refunded from the sellers paypal account

  • Even if I try to be nice to him and send the item to him on his own expense, I might have to take the postage from him. I dont want to deal with this dishonest person anyway, whatsoever. I have told him he can arrange the pickup. This leaves me with a thought, why do people show dishonesty for a few pounds.

It is a good-will refund because buyer has not been asked to send the item back. That's the crucial difference here.

  • Don't send it back or arrange pickup; if you want clarification contact ebay/paypal as to where the refund has come from - it certainly looks like a no fault refund so the seller is not out of pocket

Thanks for your message pug_in_a_bed, I have contacted ebay regarding this and I was told that they recouped money from the seller.
