safari - so baddy

Hi

Have an imac running safari. its getting so verryyyyyyy slow. Took over a minute to load this page so I could post a question. Keeps saying that it can't connect with the webpage. When you try again it connects.

I've cleared the cache and upgraded to safari 5.0.3. I tried adding some dns codes to the settings in network/advanced. One has since disappeared and the other is now greyed out. Occasionally get a DCHP (?) error and have to switch router on and off. The OS is 10.5.8

Running iantivirus.

Is it just safari? Would I be better using Mozilla or googlechrome? do you think I have a virus.

I've done a sbin/fsck -fy

and it didn't come up with anything.

TBH I am rubbish at computers and I have tried to search forums to find reasons for the slowness and tried a couple of remedies but its so slow its painful now. I'm not as knowledgeable on this system as I am on windows based OS.

any suggestions or answers? If I use mozilla or googlechrome do I have to remove safari & how do I do this.

I am using a netgear wireless router. My daughter shares the connection using her macbook. She's done this for years so that isn't the reason of the poor speeds.

Macs don't get slow! :P

As a windows user I generally just click an app to do stuff..no idea what that command line malarky is about....that's soooooo <1995

Seriously though, I hope someone can help. I think trying firefox or chrome would certainly help diagnose the problem..personally I prefer firefox though chrome is faster.

Sorry can't be much help but it might be a good idea to install update of system to 10.6.5 then you will have the most recent editions of Mac OS and Safari. (Go to Apple and 'Software Update') - it was quite a big one as I recall.

The problem wasn't with you, it was with the site. I have MAC OSX running on this laptop and it was slow both with Safari and Chrome. It was the same on my Win 7 desktop and Ubuntu on wifeys laptop.

All other sites I visit were loading OK.

thanks for all your replies. Its still driving me nuts but some days are better than others. Might need to take it to an expert to perhaps look at add ins and remove stuff that my son had on it and we don't need - just a tidy up which needs doing anyway.

Was using my old work laptop which has windows on it and was able to surf the net normally, not lose connections, fast upload and its as old as the hills working on wireless router whereas this machine is hardwired to the router. But.... it was during the day and internet traffic might have been less.

Will update to the newest version of safari.

Just wanted to post an update. Mac is working great now

Sent it to the repair shop and he did a few scans and did a tidy up and some housekeeping. There was nothing to pinpoint the problem with safari. He went on the net and downloaded Mozilla. When I tried to do this on Saturday it said it would take nearly 2 days at the download speed, he downloaded in 4 mins.

This helped pinpoint that the problem might be the internet connection. We had tried the connection wirelessly on my works laptop and DD macbook but this machine is hardwired which made us think the ethernet cable might be faulty.

We've now done away with the ethernet cable and connected wirelessly. We tried mozilla and safari and mozilla seems a tad quicker.

I don't really know what the problem was but with a bit of housekeeping and not using the ethernet connection has seemed to work. its great and I am overdosing on the forums now that everything is back to normal. Soon I will be moaning that I don't have any time to do other things!

For future reference there is a handy little maintenance programme called Onyx - you can download it for free and it will sort out most problems with slow runnig.

Shocked as I am that the ultimate OS might have some faults which the users know can't happen or at least don't like to admit, safari is the biggest security hole on OSX.
