Net Migration Rises to 215,000

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11839356Net migration to the UK rose in the year to March 2010 because fewer British people left the country, according to the latest estimates.
The figures indicate 215,000 more people came to live in the UK than moved to another country.
The Office for National Statistics figures come days after the government outlined its plans to cap immigration. Ministers want to reduce net migration to "tens of thousands" a year by 2015.
The plan currently involves cutting the number of visas available to skilled workers from outside Europe - although ministerial advisers say the target cannot be met by just targeting workers.
According to the latest ONS data, an estimated 580,000 people arrived in the UK as long-term migrants in the year to March 2010, broadly consistent with the long-term trend.
Approximately 15% of those arriving were British citizens who had been living abroad.
Over the same period, an estimated 364,000 people left the UK - continuing a downward trend since December 2008. Since the end of that year, the number of British people estimated to have left the UK has fallen by 28%, says the ONS.
Oooops.
That doesn't fit in with the bear meme of immigrants leaving the UK, and all the Brits that can emigrating.
Anyway.....
Population growth continues accelerating.... Whilst we build the fewest houses since 1924.
Rental supply down 23% on a year ago, whilst rents hit record highs.
But it must just be a coincidence, because all the bears said supply and demand is irrelevant.....;)

In fact the 28% drop in Brits leaving is interesting. why? Lack of jobs anywhere else? currency uncertainties?0

Sure, but Oz is too expensive for Brits these days.
In tough economic times, it's not surprising to see less outward movement. Fewer people are willing to take career breaks. People gravitate towards conservatism and being close to home. Less adventurousness etc.
On the other hand, a country with a lax welfare culture will attract those who want a life on benefits or those prepared to work in low paid jobs while the indiginous population sits around all day watching Jeremy Kyle.0 -

Haven't seen you post a thread for a while about houses.
When you do, you come up with this.
It's a good job tens of thousands of empty properties are currently being looked at to be taken over by councils.
I believe they are trying this in Scotland0 -
Yeah, but not in Aberdeen. Aberdeen is special.
Prices always go up in Aberdeen.0 -
