Log in - Purpose of Remember me?

When you log in what is the purpose the tick in the Remember me box?
Funny thing is if I don't tick this box my log in is not accepted:mad: .
I sometimes log in at work (during the lunch hour) but don't want other people who use the same computer to be able to use my log in. Other sites who have a Remember me seam to automatically log you in when you access their site.

I'm not sure about this one either to be honest.
Other sites that have this facility usually remember your user name so that it is already in place when you next log on, then all you have to do is input your password, alternatively some others log you on automatically when you next visit.
This doesn't seem to be the case here though as my name is never showing even when the box is checked.Herman - MP for all!0 -
I've never tried it so I'm not sure! I stayed logged in all the time0

Don't think I can help much on this. Here's what I found
Using IE:
When I leave Remember me ticked, I'm always kept logged in - Unless I clear my cookies.
If I untick it, when I close my browser (all windows) and re-open it again, I find it's logged me out.
I tried it set to various security levels. When I set it to Medium High, it wouldn't let me in (No matter if Remember me was ticked or not) but later when I put it up to Medium High, it let me in without problems ??
In firefox it's even more confusing - Unticking remember me is hit and miss as to whether it logs you out when you close your browser.
Also, sometimes you can log out but then clicking a link in your history and it acts as if you never logged out??0 -
Thanks SRA555.
I use AOL and this may be why I have problems:( .
Are you saying when you log in using IE and tick the Remember me box, then log out and come off the next time you go back into the Chat forum you are still logged in? OR don't you log out which I always do?Regards

If I leave Remember me ticked I'm permanently logged in until I click "Log Out"
A quick search found this site which also uses vbulletin andmentions AOL issues below its login box (I'm on AOL too but I never use their browser)0 -
sorry - didn't read your post fully. With IE when I click Log Out I am always logged out until I log in again. It's only on Firefox that something funny sometimes happens and I get logged in unexpectedly0

For the benefit of any other AOL users the information sra555 found describes my problem : "If you are an AOL User: If you are having a difficult time logging in, please leave the checkbox selected that says "Remember Me". If that does not work, you can try opening up another web browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari (while still connected to AOL) and login using that."
So leave the remember me box ticked.Regards
