I've started keeping track using a spread sheet. Over the summer heating was off and gas usage was low - so much so that we're £300 in credit.
Now that winter is kicking in it's burning up a lot faster. One of our rooms (above garage and external wall) dropped to 12.3c one night over the weekend (no heating on at night). So now I'm having to put heating on from around 6pm-6am
This has resulted in gas going from 745 units (Saturday morning) to 779 units (Monday 6pm). That's 34 units over 2 days, or around 17 units per day. That is roughly 190kwh per day. Our boiler is a Baxi 105e which I thought was relatively good, but perhaps not.
I'm at a loss at how to reduce thisNew boiler?

I use that in the summer just for hot water, no immersion.
It is currently snowing again here in Scotland and I am now using about 130 kWh of gas a day, my heating is on from 08:30 to 23:30 every day. Nice and warm inside, the temp is 70 deg F in the lounge.0 -

Well in which case im pleasantly surprised, especially seeing as most evenings the heatings on for around 6 hours...obviously credit to the LL for installing a new boiler last year, not bad seeing as my flat is like a sieve for heat...How the hell can you average 4 units per day with heating on for 10hrs a day? It's a Baisi combi
you will find that if you turn your boiler down to a low setting
and leaving it on for longer you will use less gas.
because you are not heating the house up from cold to hot
i have 800 mm of loft insulation.
cavity wall insulation
insulated floors
and the walls are foil lined.
i am thinking of putting electric valves on to each rad so that i can electronicaly operate them on a timer system to save even more gas0 -
Just used the smart meter website, not sure how acurate it is, but we are using alot!
read on Nov 1st was 3253
read today was 3344.
British gas websaver 6 dual fuel, says we have used 2883kwh costing
£89.59 and we use 103kwh per day costing £3.20 a day approx.
Heating is on 6-8am then 5-7pm and then 9-11pm but been someone at home most days since this cold snap has kicked in so been on for pretty much whole day, something I don't like but its not got above freezing here in Stoke since early last week and more snow forcast overnight.CC limits £26000
Long term CC debt £0
Total low rate loan debt £3000
Almost debt free feeling, priceless.
Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.0 -
I started reading mine today, I'm sadder than all of you I've been reading it hourly its been a boring day!!! I currently use about 16p an hour, which including vat is about £4 a day, I live in a 3 storey end terrace, doesn't sound alot until you work out its £125 per month. Through the summer months I use about £40 in 6 months as we have a combi boiler. I currently pay £53 per month and that was on last years figures when we hardly used the heating, just put on lots of clothes and blankets. So I'm guessing it could work out cheaper, and we will be warmer, and gas is more expensive this year.
I am trying to work out whether its cheaper to leave heating on low all the time, or use the timer like I normally do, its now colder here than it was this afternoon outside, but feels warmer in the house than it has done in ages, and its still using the same amount of gas, the walls have lost their icy feel and my bed isn't like an iceberg!
I'm going to give it a week, I'm £225 in credit, so I can afford it lol!!0 -

That topic has been discussed a few times here and usually gets a bit heated as it were.;)
I'm in the "it uses more gas if it's on, even at a low temperature" camp and that was after experimenting myself and comparing costs, but we don't want to start that one again....I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
