I use a spreadsheet and take weekly readings. Last week's gas usage was 380 kWh, although it looks like this week will be around the 400-420 mark (so 55-60 per day I suppose). I live in a 3 bed semi with gas condensing CH boiler and gas cooking. TRV's are on all rads except one, and we tend to have the room stat set at around 19-20C. Heating is on for around 2 hours in the morning and around 6 hours in the evening.

    That's why I don't understand my readings/usage.
    I've had mine on 3 1/2 hrs a day set at 13C
Last weekend I had it on a bit during the day Sat/Sun so 7 hrs at 13C those 2 days. This weekend it's been set to 11C as I've been out most of the time.

    Reading 20.11. 9854
    Reading 28.11 (now) 9868

That's 14 hcf so 440kwh about the same as yours..........1/2 the hours and lot less temp to heat to...............makes no sense to me.

So many variables can affect how much energy it takes to heat a house. How big is it? What is the structure? Does it have cavity walls and are they insulated? Does it have double glazing? Is the loft well insulated? You do seem to have your thermostat set uncomfortably low when you're there.
My gas usage was 791kWh for the last week. That's in a pretty well insulated 4 bed detached, with gas fired central heating, hot water and gas hob. Heating on 3 hours in the morning, 6 hours at night, thermostat set at 19C, no TRVs on the radiators.
Compare that to a week in June when the heating was off and I used 177kWh.

3 bed semi 1930's ex authority. No cavity walls, warmfront insulated the loft (+we put some more up there too as got given 5 rolls) were going to do walls but said they couldn't. Whole house double glazed.
It does seem to always be cold and if I put thermostat up to 18 instead of 13 it would be on the whole time!
I am quite comfy with the 13C - tho' I do use a blanket over my legs when sitting using lappy.

Just looked back - from 13.06 - 19.10 I used 346kwh.........nearly 100 less in 4 months than this last week :rotfl:

Just to add............I'm NOT in Dundee - near Cheltenham

If you join that site you can keep records of your own usage and compare it with others.

I use that too (via Ebico) - it is useful.

I have used £2 gas Saturday, £2.50 today just keeping temp up to 64f max. (17.7 c)

It is nice having a warmer home as it sinks to 55 f or below if not heated (12.7c) although I could use my snug rug.

Blimey, i must be Scrooge after reading some of the comments on here.... I'm averaging around 22 kw/h per day gas at the mo and i think that's too high. The heating comes on at 6.30 am, set at 20°c for an hour and a half and then on again in the afternoon for an hour. My wife moans constantly that she's cold but, in fairness, does walk around half clothed (not that i mind that)!! My two boys, 4 and 2 strip off most nights so it can't be that cold in the house. We do have a log fire which we light around 5pm and that keeps the lounge at a toasty 23/24°c. The bedrooms are cold though but the boys have sleeping bags under their duvets and i snuggle up to the wife so it's not a bad thing having a cold room..... Our house is three bed semi with cavity wall insulation, roof lagged to around a foot deep, new dbl glazing with energy saving glass (whatever they mean by that). The trouble is that as my wife is home all day, she's used to the inside temp and so then feels cold. I tell her to go out and fill the log basket up to see how warm it actually is indoors. Doesn't work mind......

Scrooge would be proud of you! The only time I got gas usage like yours was in September - heating off, boiler temperature turned down low as it still has to heat the hot water tank and the OH does like to have hot food so she used the gas cooker. I was using about 15kWh per day then and was quite pleased. Of course, when I went on holiday for a few weeks, I shut the boiler down (it's a trusty "old" one with a pilot light) and spent nothing on gas, just a fortune on the holiday!:)

  • From 26 June 2010 to now 505 kwh - last bill to 25 June 2010 under £9.00 for 1 week short of 3 months.
  • I dont think anyone is sad keeping a check on their gas usage! I call it being responsible for your energy consuption which is hellish given the weather. I too have done this in the past when I was very ill and very broke. As I get older I find I am more cheerful (!) when I am warm and not such a crabby bad tempered person when I am cold. I used to think I was being such a martyr to the weather and I was becoming such a self-righteous bore banging on about how many blah-blahs I had used and was still surviving. Now, I try to keep as warm as possible and for as long as possible mindful of the cost - which really is the common denominator for all of us on this thread.

Stay warm peeps and dont worry about keeping records, graphs or such - it will at least keep your brain warm with the activity!!

i take my meter readings each day, over the weekend i used about 5 units perday and use the smart meter site. During the week i expect to use less as i dont have the heating on when the kids are at school. My walls are not insulated as its a stone house but loft is insulated and its double glazed throughout. Also havent got a wall thermostat just trv's.
I will lose 2 stone by this summer!!!!!!
  • i have my heating on for 10 hrs a day all the rads are turned on.
its a 4 bed det house running on a combi boiler
my usage for the last week is 4 units (44kw) per day @ 3.258p per kw (flat rate) only got one rate.
    44kw x 3.258 = £1.43 per day +vat
only use heating from dec - march
no gas useage from march to dec as i have solar hotwater
no other form of heating at all.
gas bill for last year was £156.84
