Actually if you watch Road Wars the overly dramatic narrator describes it as "frowned upon, but legal" when they were following a suspicious car. They had to wait until something actually illegal happened before they could pull the guy over.

I overtook a lorry using one of those hatched areas just last night, it was just after exiting a roundabout and there was an oncoming traffic police car. They could easily have turned around at the roundabout and pulled me over if it were a problem, but they didn't.

And they are painted there for a reason, they are better than the two alternatives.

    1) Have lanes 1.5 times normal width, then you can't actually overtake because half the people will sit out as close to the centre as possible

    2) Bring back the old "suicide lanes", a dedicated overtaking lane for both directions with no markings. These caused confusion and head on collisions.

The hatched area with broken lines serves to reserve an area of road for the sole use of people who have actually read and understood the rules. Everyone else stays out of it and thus the head on collisions caused by the old suicide lanes don't happen.

If he's already in the hatched area then I'll stay out of it until he's done. I would trust that Strider would do the same if I happened to be in there first.

Waste of time painting them then, we can all just ignore them.

Not so sure the boys in blue would take to kindly to it.

    They do.

I was hit whilst overtaking on them.

The other driver was done for driving without due care

Yeah I was going to say actually, back in 2001(ish) while overtaking on chevrons, some guy either swerved into me (thinking I was in the wrong) or he tried to overtake without checking his mirrors.

Either way I ploughed on into him and he was deemed to be at fault.

You still ended up with a damaged car and a load of inconvenience whoever was deemed to be at fault.
