NPower

Options
Hi i'm with NPower and have been for the past 2 years, they seem ok and i get a £100 discount for duel fuel every year. I've just received it this month so am now looking due to everyones panic and other companies and there tarriffs. My consumption according to NPower is 3,854 Elec and 12,726 Gas for the coming year, i'm assuming this is the norm. I'm on standard (I think) and they estimate the cost to be just short of £1,000, it seems that this isn't bad compared to some people on here but I don't think they have done their price increase yet, does anyone know, what does anyone think, am i on a good deal, i think the £100 per year makes a difference but that will probably be wiped out with the price increase, should i just phone them and see if they want to offer me a new tarriff to stay with them or does that not work, thanks to anyone who is willing to relply to my post and for your time.:T

  • Best advice is always to do a comparison based on your actual consumption as it varies by area. The only spanner in the works is Npower and E.On have yet to announce if they are changing thier prices, EDF have said they will hold thiers until March.

  • i was with npower for 3 yrs but have just changed to edf - looking at the comparision i will be saving quite a bit more -and i was on the lowest tarrif with them - even with the npower £100 discount chucked in! i did it through this site and will now also receive 12 bottles of wine for free as well as saving money - not a choice i made quickly - i looked into it fully before i changed :)
  • Hiya I'm not sure I'm happy changing to someone who hasn't increased their prices yet, what if it's a massive increase in March won't that mean all the potential savings you thought you had made are gone or have you managed to avoid the price increase in March in your new deal?
  • Depends entirely on the particular deal. I understand they are holding prices on variable (ie not fixed) online tariffs. As long as any cancellation fees aren't too harsh it could be viable.

OP, your electricity consumption is right on normal, but your gas is very low (assuming gas CH/DHW and cooking) is about half the typical consumption for a 3 b/r house.
Standard tariff is not a good deal at all, as it is always the most expensive tariff offered by any supplier, anything up to 20% more than the cheapest discounted web tariff. Any subsequent price rises will affect all variable tariffs, standard included. So sitting on that standard tariff right through the winter will cost you dear. By March, the worst of your winter consumption is over anyway (you will use about 80% of your annual gas consumption in the coldest 4months), so if they do hike prices you will still be ahead.
And if the penalties for switching while in contract are less than the saving, you just switch anyway and pay the ETC.

Hi rateatbat - If you Switch now to a 'Lock in variable tariff' with supplier who has not yet put up prices - You have a get of Jail Free Card.

If as soon as you recieve notice of a price rise, you advise the the supplier you reject them and are arranging to Switch, they not only have to let you Switch penalty free, but also have to maintain your old prices till you do
THIS DOES NOT APPLY to Fixed price Guarantee Tariffs

    I'd just stick with nPower.

I've similar usage and year after year the price comparison websites show nPower to be the cheapest for me. What I do is go via Quidco and MoneySupermarket and choose nPower's latest Online tariff. I've done this for 3 years now and I end up on the cheaper tariff and get cashback too.

Seems odd that you get cashback when an you're an existing customer, but I guess as you're committing to another year they don't mind.
  • hi,im looking for advice with npower tariffs etc,im on a regular payment plan by card £100 a month for gas and electricity with them (not prepay meter)and ive just been informed based on my new meter reading that my payments are going to be £165 a month as of 1st december, ive checked on npower website current tariffs (based on what they say ill be using in the next 12 months)but when i go to do quotes there is no option for being on a regular payment plan when looking to switch tariffs, however ive done a few quotes saying i pay the bill on arrival etc and all are a lot cheaper than the one im currently on(standard tariff),my question is do i proceed as an existing customer when i try to switch to a cheaper tarrif via a cashback site and will they allow me to do this without any problems bieng incurred, sorry its so long winded but this increase has got me worried, tia

No cashbacks switching tariffs on the same supplier. You would need to switch supplier to get that.
