2 things:

1. One of my headlights has stopped work (side light and main beam are ok) but looking at the Halfords website I don't know which bulb to buy?! Should I buy two and refit both of them? (It was only serviced a month ago and one of the bulbs was replaced - don't know which one :o)

2. I've always thought you should change the coolant every few years. However after looking at the handbook it says the coolant does not need to be changed - is this correct? Or should it be changed anyway?

Use this websites tool to find your bulbs.....

Buy bulbs online.... Anywhere but the highstreet.

1 cheap rubbish non-brand bulb in Halfrauds will cost nearly as much as a pair of premium brand 50%+ extra brightness bulbs.
And no a bulb is not just a bulb, quality makes a huge difference!

Your headlight bulb is a standard H4 if you fit it yourself ensure you don't touch the glass part of the bulb.

Your antifreeze may not need changing but it would be wise to have its strength checked.

    Thanks for the replies.

I think I will go for these headlights http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/H4-Philips-Vision-Plus-bulbs-pair.html and replace both of them (although I'll get them elsewhere as they are out of stock) - those alright?

With regards to checking the anti-freeze. Should I just take a small amount out and stick it in a container in the freezer overnight?

they should have checked strength when servicing, but a local motor factor will sell antifreeze tester for a few quid.
personally if no record of it being done and with a 106 likely to be a fair few years old now i would just change the anti freeze.

    I second this!

    :)

Human skin oils cause weakening of the thin glass so if you do touch, you MUST clean it with a non-residue alcohol based cleaning agent/solvent.

Those bulbs will be quite good and much brighter than your existing ones. Look on ebay for H4 bulbs - there will be loads, as most cars take one or two of only 3 types, H4 being the most common. But beware on ebay for fake Phillips ones etc. I have some cheap no name ebay super bright whatever ones in my car, I just put them in because the old ones were dim as death, these ones are great.
If you're replacing with the super bright type ones then do both, it'll look odd and you won't see as well with just one replaced. And do it yourself, don't pay anyone to do it, its a 2 min easy job. There will probably be a youtube vid of how on your car.

The Halfords "rubbish" came second in the autoexpress review of standard bulbs, I use them myself with a trade card and they are good lights.

There's now a strange sound coming from the engine bay when it's first switched on (only when cold it would seem)

It switches on fine (touchwood!) but if I rev the engine slightly (car stationary, clutch down) there is a 'whirring' noise that increases in pitch as the engine revs and dies down as it comes back to idle. Once the car has warmed up the sound disappears. Any ideas? (I was thinking it may be the alternator belt slipping - but probably way out!)

I went for the Halfords super brilliance bulbs in the end - very impressed.
