Hi, i bought a Compaq laptop at end of July this year , tonight i noticed a red cross through battery. I have followed instructions on website and gave battery a health check through HP advisor ,and it is saying it is time to replace battery.
Not very tech minded, but surely a battery should last longer than 4 month ?

Depends on lots of things. However, 4 months is a short time. Should be covered under warranty?0

Thats what i thought , who would i get in touch with , manufacturer or retailer?
Try the retailer first. They'll probably tell you to contact the manufacturer, who'll probably tell you to contact the retailer
Try the retailer, or visit the manufacturers website (or your original documentation) and see if you can find any info about how to make a warranty claim.0 -
Of course, the minimum lifespan cannot be less than 1 year for today's technology in laptop. You must also take care to properly charge the battery avoiding overcharging. Now you may tell the manufacturer about the warranty period and claim for replacement.0

My laptop has a battery care function, whereby it does not fully charge the battery, or some such thing. Perhaps it might be worth seeing if yours has the same after you get it sorted? My battery is still "in good health" and bought the lappie in April, expect it to last a few years yet!
It is worth bearing in mind that often batteries are excluded from the warranty, although in this case I would think it a bit ridiculous, I would certainly be off to the retailer, laptop and receipt in hand. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
My lappy is over 2 years old and the battery is still at 95% health - I use it every day too. I think the retailer will try to say the battery is not covered by the warranty but I think you should argue the point if this happens.0

Accessories usually come with a six month warranty so contact the retailer and get them to sort it as your contract is with them, if they try passing the buck tell them to contact the manufacturer while you wait.0

Retailer has arranged to collect it tomorrow, so fingers crossed it gets replaced.0

Make sure you back everything up that you need before they collect! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

AND remove any personal data, letters, etc.
Download CCCleaner and run that to remove ALL your cookies and I think any passwords you have stored via Internet Explorer.
However certain information such as your e-mail passwords if using Outlook Express are still available.
Open up OE account settings and remove password.0
