Weird Car Noises!

Hey,

Just encountered a bit of problem driving back from Coventry about an hour ago in my Peugeot 306.

Coming up the A45, and heard a noise behind the passenger side airbag and through the left side (passenger) vent initially.

This I believe resulted in strange noises coming from the left vent and engine for the journey. These noises occured when I took my foot off the gas, and was in gear. If I revved in neutral and took my foot off the gas, no bad noises and the same if I was in gear and the clutch was in.

I'm really quite puzzled. What could the problem be? Nothing wrong with performance on the way ...

Sounds like engine braking (bit of a whine as the wheels start driving the engine). Probably appears through the vent due to (lack of) soundproofing in that area (just a guess, I don't have a 306).

Noise happened in every gear at every speed.

As soon as I lifted my foot off it would happened, straights or corners, and would be a constant rattle in the passenger side air vent and into the car.

It was such a weird sound ... not sure how to describe. It was more serious than just a rattle. lol.

No ... wouldn't have said it was wheel based.

The thing that is getting me is why it would be linked with only one vent. You could only hear a rattle in the passenger side vent (as well as the engine) and none of the others.

It also happened as I was driving, not from the start up of the engine. So something has happened in the car for it to happen, but not to effect the cars performance in anyway.

Im bemused ... think the garage may have the deal with this one.

if it is a diesel it could be your dual mass flywheel,i have had this problem on an avensis, and the gearbox specialist says it is becoming an increasing problem on any diesel car fitted with one

    UPDATE:

Driving into work - the noise is still there BUT not through the vent anymore. The sound doesn't appear to be coming from a specific place.

However, the sound is speed related. If I'm going at 40mph and take my foot away the sound is faster and harsher than if I do it at 20mph.
  • might be safer to take it to garage in case its escalates into a serious problem, my oh is in motor trade and mechanics are good at noise solving, you wouldn't want to break down in the middle of nowhere, best to get it looked at before it gets worse. may need new plugs or something. hope this helps

Is it a knocking noise, loud rattle, whining noise, etc? Any other noises heard previously?

  • could be dirt or stone stuck in wheel? break hard to see if it clears it!
