Weight loss during pregnancy?

7lbs in 2 weeks? Is that ok/bad? 3rd trimester.
That is not all the weight that has been lost, that is just what as been monitered by midwife/nurse ..... up until 2 weeks ago mum-to-be was the exact same weight she was when she was first weighed in on knowing she was pregnant (due in Jan).
Baby is showing up as "ok" "normal size" mum-to-be looks like she has lost a HUGE amount of weight. She looked really healthy/glowing at the begining of 2nd trimester for about a week, but she is now looking quite drained and she doesn't have the glow she used to have.
Should I worry? Baby seems fine, but am worried about Mum-to-be. She had terrible morning sickness and I kid you not ... went many many days without eating a thing, then she would have one small (toddler portion, if that) meal a day. She says she is now having about 3 small bowls (they are very small! I've seen them!) of food (fruit/cereal bars/yogurt drink and one carb based meal) a day on an average day, she can do less or more on some days.
I don;t know what to do
I have told her to try and at least have 6 bowls a day to start with, but she has lost all concept of what is a normal amount to eat after her long long period of morning sickness.
Any advice appreciated

Was she carrying any extra weight before she got pregnant ... i.e. does she have a bit of a buffer and could the baby be using up these resources now as babies do a lot of their growing in the third trimester.0

She had quiet a lot of extra weight ... it has all gone now, that is why I am worried now (much more than before, as I knew baby would be feeding off stores she had) that she is still losing weight. She doesn't have anything else left (stored weight) so what affect would this have on her and baby?I can say whatever I like here ... She needs to see her GP/MIDEWIFE. Can't give medical advice.
I had morning sickness every day from six weeks and necver dropped weight till the 8 th month . Then it was only 4lb. I was told by my midewife it was normal to drop a couple of lb's in the last month.0 -
It's my understanding (which could very possibly be wrong) that the baby will get all the best resources first and the Mum comes in second, which would explain why the baby is a normal size and the Mum is losing the weight. IMO I think quantity of food is less of an issue than quality. If she can make sure that what little she is eating is nutritious then that will help her and baby. Do you know if her midwife is concerned about her weight loss at all?0

From what she has told me about them ... they are being a little silly really. She suffers from epilepsy (sp?) and they never addressed the issue at all:rolleyes: She had to pester them to find out the medication she was on 'may' have an affect on her baby - she was distraught about this. They now want to monitor her weight, every 2 weeks ..... I personally feel that it should be checked every week considering how much she lost in the space of 2 weeks.
Kiwi ... She said she did get a 'telling off' about the weight loss. She is eating very healthy food, but tiny tiny portions (low calories).
Edit: Just to add, although they told her off, they did not tell her how much she should be eating.I can say whatever I like here ... 'cos no one can see me .. ner ner ner ner ner !!!....How do you know I ain't sitting here butt naked?!?!I thunk I've made you think for a minute!:j :rotfl: :j0 -
I told my midwife at 12 weeks I was vegetarian and worried about my diet with morning sickness too. She arranged for me to see a dietian (sp?)0

Same here .... but my concern is ... as Kiwi said, and with both my kids .... they grow the most in the 3rd trimester .... baby was ok to feed off her resources in the 1st and 2nd, but she doesn't have anything left and isn't eating enough now ... not enough intake for an adult, let alone a pregnant woman ... if that makes sense
She has had dizzy spells, has had a serious fall (thankfully they are both ok, Mum's a little bruised though) and after a day at work, that's it .... she has to sleep.

I will tell her to request an appointment with one ..... (she's not a vegetarian .... but she can't stand meat at the moment) sSo hopefully, she can be advised as to what adequate food intake is.I can say whatever I like here ... Don't you just love it when health professionals treat you like a child but are then very unhelpful! Is it just the midwife that is being unhelpful or could someone else help, maybe the GP or even a helpful HV?0
