Transferring car ownership

My mum's car is in her name, but she doesn't want to drive it anymore and has offered it to me. Can anyone advise how we would change the ownership over to me?

I.e. to make me the registered owner - just call the DVLA?

Insurance policy - not due for renewal til April. Would I be able to take this over (and just pay a top up, if necessary) or is it more likely they'd ask me to take out a new policy altogether?

Tax - just been paid - again, would I just take this over, or would I need to get out a new one? And do I tell them about change of ownership or does DVLA do this?

Anything else I should think of?

You will gather I am a complete motoring ignoramous - apologies in advance for all the bleeding obvious questions

Cheers

You need your mother to fill in the relevant parts of her car's V5C document to transfer the ownership to you (same as if she were selling it) and post it to the DVLA.

You will need a new insurance policy for yourself, unless you are a named driver on her policy and she is happy to keep the policy until it is due for renewal. She will need to tell the insurance company that you are the registered keeper now however.

The car tax is fine and this will stay with the car when you tranfer ownership. If she wanted to your mother could apply for a partial refund of any remaining months on the tax. Of course you then would have to buy a new tax disc.

Send the V5 off but that registers you as the keeper not the owner. If you are the main driver you should have the insurance in your name. The tax stays with the car unless its in disabled class or your mother wants to refund it. If you leave the insurance in your mothers name but you are the main driver it may unless the insurance agree invalidate your insurance.

No point faffing about with refunds and a new tax disc - it will only serve to enrich the DVLA.

As said, you'll only be able to transfer the registered keeper of the vehicle. If you want to make sure you are the "owner" then print out an invoice for the vehicle and get your mum to sign it.
  • ...v helpful. About becoming the owner of the car - how would I print an invoice? The poor old banger is over 10 years old, we don't have the paperwork of how much it cost etc

Is there a specific reason you need to prove ownership of the vehicle?
  • Ps - sorry ROY47 - link seems to be broken - could you give me the name of the doc on the Motor Trade Printing website?
