    I should have expected such a reaction from someone who 'thinks' that they are being clever.

    To the OP, there is no harm in asking but as mentioned previously you will have no come back if the work is not up to standard and as I have discovered recently, there are far too many cowboys in the plumbing business. 2 weeks ago I was repairing a shower that some idiot didn't mount to the wall properly and last week someone came to "fix" my boiler but failed..he didn't even have a screwdriver with him!
