i cant sleep, get dressed, cant shower or bath, get in or out of bed, in or out of chair or make a drink with out some support or help as my legs give way due to the sciatica in my legs.

Is there any reason why you can't sit down and make a drink or use a shower seat? MRIs mean nothing. I had an ECG about 10 years ago, which showed my brain activity as abnormal. Yet, this doesn't prove care or mobility needs. Neither does the test I had done that shows that my optic disks are damaged and my optic nerves aren't fully formed.

I sympathise with you for your problems as a veteran of two bi-lateral Discectomies from L5/S1 through to T12 with coflex inserts and a dural tear caused by the surgeon, meaning a third op on the area. I doubt the prolapsed disc is pressing on your spinal cord, rather the pulposus causing compression.

Being awarded DLA must be based on your needs and that is for back sufferers or any other injury. Having become very well read on the subject I find that there are many people who are awaiting surgical intervention could help themselves by changing their lifestyles. Whilst that will never cure anyone, it can go part way helping. As for things such as the ATOS medical, remember it is on points.

the reason i cant sit down n walk etc is due to serve pain, and the back doesnt allow me to bend etc.
sciatica also causes a hugh issue.

with regards to change of liftstyle, i have tryed this for a few years to no reward if anything causing me more pain then before making the back worse.

surgery is the only option i have left to try and help my problem.
  • I have had a back problem for over 15 years,in October last year my back gave out on me,in March 2010 i had an operation to remove part of a prolapsed disc, after the operation, the surgeon told me he removed 85-90% of the disc,he also said i have degenerative, extensive nerve damage. i had to claim employment support allowance,it replaces Incapacity benefit, i have had 3 atos medical assessments, been told i am unfit for employment for the future time, but this may change.

i have been advised to claim Disability Living Allowance.each case is different, but from your question,i think you will have to claim ESA
    & attend medical assessments
  • Thank you all for your input, I couldn't find the thread, as I am still getting use to the site. I am waiting for a response from the DLA and will keep you all updated later.

I am a bit worried if am unable to do my job as I have a mortgage and I don't think the benefit will help me much if I was to get the ESA
