I've just reread your op and I see that you're actually enquiring about the possible financial situation in a year's time! I think that you need to make clear to your son that you'll be unable to support him financially when he's 20 and that he'll have to get a part time job to pay for his expenses and towards his keep.

He needs to focus his efforts and explaining the situation to him clearly should help.

I agree with Oldernotwiser. If you set the ground rules now - as much as you love him to bits, you wont be doing him any favours by giving him a free ride. Tell him now, that you will be expecting to see some board money coming from him and set a date. if that date comes and no board money - then I would stop him having things like tele and internet on in his room etc. It sounds petty but i seriously believe with teenagers you can not let them take the micky for too long. I assume at the minute he is getting ema? well there is nothing to stop him from giving this to you each week, minus his busfare is there.
The opposite of what you know...is also true

The child benefit etc should continue getting paid until his 20th birthday, that is what happened with my son last year ( the day he turns 20 is the day it ceases) he was able to claim ALG for himself though.
