an extra bank holiday next year

  • Scotland usually has Good Friday as a bank hol but not Easter Monday. Each town tends to have a town holiday later on instead. I am worried that a 4 day, 3 day, 4 day week will severely impact income. I reckon we lose £700 each bank holiday so I am not happy. We have also decided that because we are a service business, we cannot be shut on the wedding day but are doing a short day instead (close at 4pm instead of 7pm) and will give the staff an extra day off another time. This will help us balance staff numbers as we can manage with staff holidays currently.

Not being in business myself I am probably missing something, but surely the trade that is lost on a Bank Holiday would be made up over other days. If I can't buy something, get my hair cut, get my car serviced etc. on a particular day then I would wait until the next available day.

Although I do accept that if you're selling things to commuters/people at work on a daily basis, then you would lose a day's trade.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

No alot of trade is on impulse

What about this Christmas? If your busy day is Saturday it is a real pain.

    Xmas Day (Sat)
    Boxing Day (Sun)
    Bank Holiday Monday
    Bank Holiday Tuesday
    Weds
    Thurs
    New Years Eve
    New Years Day (another Saturday!)
    Sunday
    Bank Holiday Monday

Cashflow is going to be very tight at the end of the month, and have to balance the needs of business against looking after staff...would normally shut NY Day but it's a Saturday and after so many short working days need to try and get some money coming in.
  • so basically..... queenie decides there is going to be a public Holiday and WE have got to pay for it...

In this tight buckling, recession hitting, loads of businesses going to the wall times... they expect us to pay for this day off...

Surely if Queenie wants us all to have a day off for her grandson's wedding, she/government should pay for it..

Do you think I should write a letter to her asking her to pay for my staff's wages for the day? as i surely cant afford to pay my staff to do nothing....

My staff think it should be an EXTRA day, which in all honestly if i was employed i would think and expect the same...:rotfl:

If it's the government that pays for it then basically that means us through our taxes. As it is, Betty (and KM's parents) is paying for the wedding. The rest of us are paying for the security arrangements.

Call me a miserable so and so if you like, but I think they should have got married on a Saturday and there shouldn't have been a bank holiday. With the country in the state it's in, many people will be expecting employers to stump up for an extra day of paid holiday they can ill afford.

I got married on a Friday, but that was because we'd have had to wait for ages to get an available Saturday at the place we wanted to marry at. It's not like there will be another wedding taking place at Westminster Abbey on the Saturday is it.

As a business owner I find it hard to get meaningful decisions out of customers for half of December and January because of Christmas, I can see the same thing happening for April/May.

SLINKY - You are a miserable so and so!!

But actually I agree wholeheartedly with your post. Why don't they get married on a Saturday and is there any real need for a Bank Holiday.

The fact that the wedding is on a Friday is better for us as Saturday is our best day for income.
So I guess they really couldn't please all of us.
It is a bit strange though that a bank holiday can just be declared without any thought of all the employers who will lose income.
