As supporting argument against the change from RPI to CPI indexation, this article from the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) has the relevant arguments included.
As the NPC has been lobbying MP's on the proposed changes, it would remind MP's of the widespread support for Early Day Motion 1032, if it were mentioned in your letters.

Read the NPC parliamentary briefing on the proposed change in uprating state, public and private sector pensions from RPI to CPI.

Ah Old Slaphead! So logically, we can extrapolate you believe some people should have RPI? I thought that it was necessary for wages, benefits and pensions to be on a lower inflation rate in your eyes so that industry becomes more competitive? Sorry if I assumed you meant that was for all and not just for those you feel are entitled. Pray, who may these people be that you feel should have RPI and for what reason?

You have regaled this thread with your views many times. I only respond to your specific points with my specific points. And why not go off topic to explain a little more? It hasn't stopped you so far.

Though you may not have addressed your comments specifically to me you have consisently made comment on other people's posts even where their remarks were purely on EDM 1032 - the topic of the thread.

Thanks for this. I'm going to write to my MP again and include the text of that briefing in my letter. When I read the pre election statements made by the various parties, it fairly makes me sick to my back teeth with polititians. Who would vote for any of them after this? (Rant over).
  • I think the best thing to do now is to totally ignore Bendix and old slaphead, they are just a pair of forum trolls only interested in their own opinions. Do not engage or reply to them and slowly they will get bored and go away, but even if they don't just ignore their posts and lets just talk over them. Personally I am not going to even bother reading their drivel anymore. Bendix and old slaphead you are the weakest link..... goodbye.

    Now then, where were we?

    Thanks DiggerUK,
I've e-mailed that briefing to Damian Green. Keep up the pressure.

You can logically extropolate no such thing. By staying silent on a subject it doesn't automatically follow that I agree it.

I put the argument that low indexing all round would be beneficial for everyone in the long run - nowhere did I use the word necessary.

As regards those entitled to RPI - it's those who have it legally written into there contracts and not those who logically extrapolate it from previous inferences.

If you wish to continue this contest please base your deconstruction of my arguments on what I've actually posted and not your own interpretation of the same.

    BTW is this a 5 minute or 10 minute argument ? :)

Seems a sensible strategy (I did suggest it in #479)

Please, however, if you continue to use MSE, refrain from persistent name calling - it's not big, it's not clever and you won't make too many friends that way.

I agree Boxerfan UK. Back to the subject.

The news today has been covering many if not all Local Authorities increasing the cost of funerals way above the RPI to cover some of their Government cuts. I heard a figure of 21% in one case which is alarming. With the average Civil Service pensions at £6700 a year, with a quarter of retired civil servants receiving less than £2000 a year (www.cspa.co.uk) this is yet another thing for a lot of people to worry about later in life. The average cost of a funeral is £2000 (BBC this morning) and I am pretty sure that does not include all the costs.
All their working lives these people were led to believe that their pensions would rise in line with the RPI.
The well thought out and reasonable proposition taken in EDM 1032 is worth fighting for. The purpose of section 150 of the Social Security Administration Act is to protect the value of pensions against the ravages of inflation and the Minister has a duty to ensure that this happens. EDM 1032 is simply asking the Government to postpone the move to the CPI until the examination is completed and evaluated.
We have a clear duty to try to get our MPs to sign up for the EDM.

Well said we have given them enough time. Lets ignore them and keep to the thread which is proving very valuable. I think March 26th will be a very important starting point to progress on this issue.
I also notice none of the shadow cabinet seem to have signed EDM 1032 does anyone know of the official labour party view of this issue?

    Great idea.

Ignore views that don't agree with your own, and continue to whip each other up into a lather of self-congratulatory enthusiasm as your trawl around looking for obscure weblinks to send to ministers.

    Smart move.
