  • Thanks a lot for all this information, I've been on their site before and found it all a bit overwhelming, so much information, especially being on benefits and knowing what will affect my money etc (money is the most important thing for me as I've got children to provide for) and after looking at so many different things I usually end up thinking it will never happen and not bother, but I've looked at the level 1 courses and certificates I think I could manage that (to start with).
I'll give them a ring tomorrow and find out when I can start.
    Thanks !
  • Peainapod - I will just second what everyone else has said about the OU! I am not sure exactly what direction i want to go in but I am hoping as time goes on that it will become clear. I love the way you can choose modules to suit your interests and career aspirations. I am currenty a stay at home mum and I NEED to get my brain going again.
I hadn't studied for almost 10 years (and to be honest I didn't try very hard even then) and this year I completed my first module and am now on my second. I am considering increasing the points I study at once as I have enough time, but it was great to start slowly as I didn't get overwhelmed.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
  • Hi Peainapod

Just wonderinf if you managed to speak to anyone today? Made any decisions yet? I found actually deciding where to start quite challenging mainly because I wanted to make sure I got it right first time it took me all in all about 4 weeks to decide on my first modules and even now I still have not fully decided which degree to have them allocated towards.

It is exciting though I feel as though for the first time in a very long time I have some focus in my life that can only lead to something better than I have now :)

Anyway I hope it all went well
  • Hi again guys,

Right well after reading what you said and contacting the OU (they were great) I've decided to take a module in science. They told me that I can just do a module or even a couple of modules to start rather than committing to a full on course, which is exactly what I wanted as there's much less chance of me getting overwhelmed and giving up. I can't wait to start, I'm hoping that tonight I'll register on the module and hopefully get started soon. I haven't studied in so long ! And when I was in school I didn't bother making much effort, well apparently what our parents drum into us as teenagers is true lol. I'm really hoping this is a turning point for me, I hate being branded a scrounger on benefits and can't wait to get off them and I'm hoping that getting the qualifications I want will secure my and of course my childrens future !
Rainbow - Glad to know I'm not alone ! :)

Hey well done peainapod ! I bet you feel quite excited. :j

You never know it might be one of the best decisions you ever make!

My next course is Leonardo da Vinci - it comes under the arts, but I suppose it will be arts and science. I've already done an openings course previously.

    Enjoy your course. Best Wishes

Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T
  • Hiya, I was also going to suggest the OU lol! I did an OU module whilst I was a SAHM, I did a 30 credit course @ level 1 which I found very doable. I applied for financial support which was granted. I felt very well supported by the OU I could not fault them. Doing the module really boosted my confidence and made me realise my brain actually did still work after having kids lol! After completing it I applied to do Midwifery at uni which is where I am now (well.... on maternity leave at the mo but thats a different story) I would highly recommend them, there are so many courses to choose from, there's something to interest everybody. Good luck!
    Midwife in the making....
  • Good luck with the Open University, I got my degree with them :j
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)
  • Right well I'm trying to start the process now, I went to the financial support application form and they tell me I need to register on the course / module I want to do before I can do the financial application (keeps asking for my OU username). But if I try and register on the course it wants me to pay :S am I being totally stupid or did you guys have the same issue ?
  • If your kids are over six years old, why not take up scouting. It is free for an adult, we need you and it is great fun.

Ps, you could even bring the kids aswell
