BBC News Rant

I've been unfortunate enough to be in the car several times today and heard the BBC news. They've picked up on some story of a survey done by some childrens action group that claims that 10% of all children have been 'in contact' with a car.

They then found some poor woman whos mother had been killed in a road traffic accident and therefore the OBVIOUS conclusion that they've drawn is that speed limits should be reduced from 30mph to 20mph in towns and further traffic calming measures introduced.

WHY WHY WHY are the motorists being targeted here? WHY cant our children be taught the highway code like they used to be via high profile TV campaigns etc? WHY cant parents take more responsibility for their children and ensure their children are NOT playing on or near roads. WHERE is the ownership here? Are we saying that cars are driving on footpaths or that children are on roads??? I drove through a village recently where traffic calming methods had been introduced. There were STILL children playing on the roads and road sides - would it not have been cheaper to teach the children to stay away from the roads, rather than introduce traffic calming so they could still wander about like sheep??

YES, its awful to hear of an accident whereby a pedestrian is killed or injured, but surely oppressing motorists even further isnt ALWAYS the answer??

Rant over!! :)

typical bl00dy BBC they are a very poor excuse for a broadcaster, not related to your rant but i am just about sick of all the royal wedding crap they keep going on about,so what if some posh loaded !!!!!! is getting married i dont really care there is absolutely no need for them to be wasting our money sending people out reporting on this subject.!!!!!! young soldiers are dying in afghan yet the royal wedding is more news worthy!!!
best thing is to do what i have done switch the BBC radio station off i either listen to ipod or a commercial station now.

rant over sorry for hijacking your thread.

It's called sensationalist journalism. The reporters are halfwits who seek out other halfwits to validate their pathetic non-newsworthy stories.

But... won't somebody, somebody please think of the children?!

Agreed we can teach them all we can but its only takes that split second of forgetfulness.

Speed limits should be dispensed with altogether. That would keep bloody pedestrians on their toes.
  • It's cotton wool wrapped kids that are driven to and from every where including the local school, in mummy's picasso br*t carrier with barely legal tyres.

When I was a kid we walked. Hell I even walked to and from school myself from about 8 years old. You never saw me dart out into the road without looking. We're only talking about the early 90's here. Not a lifetime ago.

Never see kids walking to school now hardly.

agree with most of what you say the only bit i disagree with is most kids these days are transported to and from school in a gaz guzzling 4x4 that gets dumped anywhere in order to allow the kids to get in or out.
maybe the BBC should do a piece about mum trucks getting dumped on the yellow zigzags while they unload rather than blaming the motorist all the time?
  • Kids will be kids and no amount of drilling it into them will stop them running out after a ball or pushing each other off the pavement walking to school.People feel its ok to drive at 35-40mph in 30 zones so if this comes in maybe they will apply the same thinking and drive at 25-30mph in a 20.
You can stop a car much much faster at 20mph than you can at 30mph not just by the amount you'd think from only 10mph, so at least they have a reason for doing it but imo it should just be around schools and on certain roads rather than a blanket speed limit drop.

The 1 in 10 thing sounds very unlikely to me, maybe they asked a bunch of kids who were playing chicken.

How many cars have you seen with the notices in the back saying please drive carefully little princess in the car, and the driver is driving like a lunatic, with no consideration for anyone else.
