What happens when your parcel is not received?

I sent a small parcel to my winning bidder on 09/10/2006 by 1st class post and he has now informed me that he still has not received it. The total price including postage was only £11.00 and he paid by Paypal.

Fortunately, I still have the receipt and hand written on it is the buyer's postcode. It was not recorderd or guaranteed delivery, just bog standard parcel post.

What happens now?

Looking at his feedback 275 - 100% positive, I'm inclined to think that it is genuine.

I've searched the Ebay site for advice and can't find anything - any help or advice will be greatfully appreciated

i think you agree to refund the price of the item but not the postage - this is what people have told me they do in the past, thankfully it's not happened to me, but if they've got positive feedback, it probalby is genuine

i'd be inclined to ask for a few more days for the item to get there before you do anything though, i know things sent in work are sometimes taking 2 weeks to get to the destination

Talk to your buyer, make sure he understands that you are happy and willing to refund *in full* but ask whether he could wait until Monday and if it doesn't arrive then to contact you again.

You will need to refund the full amount originally paid, including post and packing and make sure you just refund the original payment as that reverses the fees as well.

Then after 15 working days reclaim your losses from the Royal mail.

It is better to refund willingly than let it go to a paypal chargeback which you cannot win.

That's a good idea..it makes you look good, the buyer will see you are sorting this out for him and it gives you a couple more days to see if the item arrives.

  • Always send recorded delivery for goods upto £20.00. That what you are insured for under 1st class post. If you send a mobile phone out 1st class and someone says they did not receive it, you will be able to get £20.00 back.

Always send recorded delivery and always tell someone at the post office what the value of the goods are!

A certificate of posting covers you for up to £32, and it's free.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

LIke fay says, why pay an additional 68p for recorded when a certificate of posting insures you up to £32 anyway? AS for £20, is here a reason why you suggest that figure particularly?

I did break my own rule and send a few items recorded this weekend, but purely because I am going on holiday and selling £30 items up to the very last minute and thought if there was any problems while I was away having supploed a recorded delivery tracking number might hold off a buyer until I return.

If you refund him and keep proof then he couldn't later chargeback. If he paid by paypal then just refund his original payment, do not send a new payment as that will leave the original one still showing as paid. If he paid by any other means, refund him by cheque.

Always try and stall the buyer until well into the 2nd week of you can, some are happy to give it a bit of time, some are not so 'feel' the situation.

Items do go astray, I usually insert my own experience where neither my own nor my sister's birthday present to my mother arrived last year, so as long as you cover yourself against that loss all should be well.

Thanks sooling for your resoponse, it just makes me think how imporant it is to send recorded.

Any person who buys via 1st class standard would be able to claim he/she had not received it even if they definately did, and just keep on denying it!
And nobody could prove otherwise (buyer or P/O) and could be persistant claiming thay never received item and demanding a full refund. Couldnt this prove to be a mojor flaw ???
