    !!!!!! customer from hell!

In a situation like that does anyone else think it reasonable for the waiter to spit in the OP's food?

What a stupid thing to complain about.

I'm at least partly with the OP here.
I bottle IS a specific quantity of wine, just as 'a barrel' of oil is, or 'a cup' if you are American.
If I asked for 'a bottle' of the house wine and they didn't sell it in bottles, I would expect them to say so, and ask me whether I wanted half a litre or a litre.

Having said that, i think it is pretty common and not entirely a con - but I do hate it cos half a litre is not enough so I am forced to drink more - actually, maybe it is a bit of a con.

Would it have been better if they charged the same price for a 75cl bottle?

It would have been a con had there have been a cheaper alternative on the menu.
It would have been a con if the waiter had tipped away a quarter of the litre (and still charged for the full litre) in order to give the OP exactly what they asked for.
It would have been a con if the restaurant had advertised the "equivalent price per bottle", implying that you could buy a bottle for this price.

    But none of that happened.

They could have mentioned that it came in litres (just like you get asked if Pepsi is ok when you order a Coke) but I still fail to see that it would have made any difference. It was still the best thing for the OP to choose on the wine list.

If the OP can find another restaurant that is as nice but a couple of pounds cheaper due to selling house wine by the bottle then that's a perfect solution. If not, I'm not sure there's much the OP can do other than put up with it. You could suggest to the restaurant that they start selling house wine by the bottle, but it may not achieve much.
