Whats a bottle of wine?

Went for a meal the other day, and with the meal we ordered a bottle of house wine (I didnt check or see any wine list). I didnt notice until I came to pour us a second glass that the bottle seemed rather large (easy thing to do in there as the light is very low level).
And indeed it was a litre bottle, I did complain that when ordering a bottle of wine I expected and only wanted to get a normal sized bottle, however the staff response was that a ltr bottle was standard size there.
My opinion is that this was a bit of a con, and for the sake of getting a few extra quid they lose a customer for good, which I would think was a poor way to run a business, is this standard practice anywhere else?
Restaurant in question was the Cafe Bar in Ormskirk, Lancashire

I've worked in a couple of restaurants and house wine in those has always been served as a carafe or half a carafe which equates to 1 litre or half a litre.
I've also had house wine in 70cl bottles.
Did they not give you a wine list?0 -
How exactly is it a bit of a con. If they only do litre bottles then thats all they do. I doubt the profit margine is much different then if they had a 750ml bottle of hiuse wine. Bigger bottle does not mean bigger profitsone of the famous 50

You ordered something without knowing the price/size...why? It could have been 75cl and £50 or 1L and £20...size doesn't matter here!. The MSE way has not been followed!0

Well I assumed in my naivety that a bottle would be a standard size 70 cl bottle, and yes to have seen a wine list would have been wise beforehand, of course they could have come out with a jeroboam so it could have been worse!
It just seems a bit sneaky to me, and it is a bit of a con because you are not getting what you would reasonably consider to have ordered.Aha, so thats how you do a signature!0 -

like someone else stated you expected a 70 or 75 cl bottle and got a litre? you already knew what price it was so must have been happy to pay for a smaller amount and in reality got more for your money - If I had got a 500 ml or less then I would have a problem with it but getting more?
as for getting litre bottles, I used to buy LIDL Vin de Pays De L'herault as it tasted ok for table wine, cost about the same as other bottles but come in litres white or red.
Although won't be buying any wine for quite a while as harvested all the blackberries in the field at the back of my girlfriends house which all went to waste last season (not even the animals could eat them all).
Have made about 36 bottles of Blackberry Wine, then all the apples in her garden are now bubbling away to make cider
Big sack of plums, and still more blackberries in the freezer we haven't had room to make into wine yet -
Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -

I didnt know the price, but well done on making your own, have done plenty myself, if only you could take it into most restaurants.....Aha, so thats how you do a signature!0 -

yep good point,
but at least it will save on having to buy any for the house especially over the christmas period :beer:Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
They should have given you the option. It's like ordering a glass of wine; if it's a good restuarant they ask what size. Yes, you've been Tango'd and they're stupid because they've lost custom.0

Am I the only person who is confused as to why OP is cross he got MORE than he paid for?
Surely if you order wine at a certain price expecting a 75cl bottle and instead get a whole litre, you're better off?0
