Ex partner debts

Hi
I'm a little worried about a letter which has arrived addresses to an ex which I opened in error without looking at the name on the front.
It was from a debt collection agency asking for a debt to be paid which belonged to an ex partner who lived with me for a while.
My ex left some years ago and this letter is completely out of the blue. It is asking for payment within 72 hours or they could either do a 'Doorstep' visit or apply to courts to recover the debt by taking assets. Nothing in my property belongs to my ex, everything has been paid for by me.
Well I have no idea where my ex is and had no dea about the debt. No bills have come to my address for my ex for years and I have no association with my ex at all any more.
What can I do?
Any advice appreciated.
Thank you.

what deb collection agency, if its mackenzie hall, then keep at one side, see what happens, they are nasty, lf this not your name etc. I would not do anything until they come to you again. More people here are the expert in this field.. it is worrying, you could glue the letter down send back into the mail system, saying not at this address..
hope its the last you hear of it, best wishes0 -
I've just read another thread regarding Mackenzie Hall so now understand what you meant. The problem is, when I receicved the letter, in my utter anger and frsutration that I'd received it (born of a bad relationship), it went straight onto the shredder.

edit: I've just had a look at their site and by the look of their logo / address, etc and thinking about the letterhead from memory, I'm pretty sure it was them. Now I'm really worried.0 -
Hi
Please take a few deep breaths.
Unless this debt was a joint one, they can do nothing and you are probably best ignoring them altogether. If they write again return, gone away and perhaps the year.
Door stepp collectors have no legal rights at all. There is no way ANYONE including real bailliffs rather than "debt collectors" can take you goods to pay of your ex's debts.
Neither have any right to enter you house. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Thank you, your reply has helped a little. I was in tears and am still shaking.
It was not a joint debt, no. I'm also pretty sure the debt is now over 6 years old, which I believe makes it 'Statute Barred' ? (of which I know little and am reading about).
I must admit I am still worried. By pure coincidence I watched a group of around 8 'large' people, dressed in dark clothes (surprisingly similar to Police outfits), gloves, stab vests, etc., enter a house only 10 or so doors down the road from me a few days ago. This is the image which popped into my mind when I read this letter.0 -

Unless there is a CCJ, it will probably be statute barred in that case.

Is there any possibility of a CCJ without me knowing about it? I know of none, so assume there isn't one..
Thank you.0 -

Well, since it is not your debt or even a joint one, this is somewhat irrelevent, as it makes no doffernece to the fact that there is nothing they can do to get money from YOU.
if you want to know if your ex has CCJs, you can input his data into the Registry Trust and it might show up. Costs £8 and does not make any difference to your situation. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Ok, thank you. Doubt I'll bother doing that as even that would frustrate me more. I guess I'll wait and see what their next move is.
Should I send a letter regarding Statute Barred if they contact me again, or simply go for the 'Return, Gone Away, Year' option?
I'm wondering if mentioning Statute Barred would put them off altogether where as 'Gone Away' may simply prolong things?
Many thanks again.0 -
You have no knowledge of the debt so I don't see how you can write to them claiming it's statute barred. You simply don't have the information to make that claim, and in any event you should preserve your position of maintaining that the debt has nothing to do with you.
I would return the correspondence marked 'addresee unknown'.Total Debt Sept 2010 - £24,132.38 / Current - £0.00/ 100% paid
DFD - [STRIKE]Aug 2014[/STRIKE] 24th Aug 2012
£10 a day // Jun - £64/£300 / Jul - £133/£310 / Aug - £281/£3100 -
I hope by this morning you are feeling a lot better about this. This is not your debt so this is not your problem.Thank you, your reply has helped a little. I was in tears and am still shaking.
Don't phone them no matter what, they are experts at bullying people and it will just make you angry/upset/scared depending on what line they take. They won't turn up at your door and even if they did they are looking for someone who no longer lives there.
They cannot force entry into your home.
They cannot make you pay for a debt that isn't yours
They cannot take anything that belongs to you for a debt that isn't yours
If this is M.Hall this is their usual phishing expedition where all possible contacts for the debtor (including similar names) are sent letters in the hope that someone, somewhere bites. They don't care if it's the right person or not, whether the debt is enforceable, legal or anything like that - they just want money.0
