Warning if you live in a flat - John Lewis & Rangemaster

This is my first ever post so hope I've posted in the correct section - but I had to share what has happened to us .
If you live in a flat DO NOT BOTHER trying to buy a range cooker from John Lewis and Rangemaster. After ordering over a month ago, and after numerous telephone calls from us, we have been told they wont deliver because they have to carry the oven up 13 stairs. It was even suggested that my 81 year old father help carry the oven up the stairs! Disgusting service - especially as our home is kitted up with everything from John Lewis. We were also going to have new flooring put in by them, which would have cost nearly £2000 – that won’t happen now!
I cant believe that people who live in flats cannot buy a range cooker because the delivery people wont carry them up stairs!!
WE WILL NEVER SHOP WITH THEM AGAIN!
Is there some kind of consumer body we can contact to complain to ?

Wind up?
I think JL stance is reasonable; they have staff to think of; anyone with a brain cell knows carrying a range cooker up 13 stories is going to be difficult and time consuming and probably need specialist equipment to do so.
I assume lifts are not an option in this case.
As for complaining; no; JL can not be forced to contract with you; especially in a case where they have real reason not to do so. If its so unreasonable then surely you wont have a problem finding someone else to do it?0 -
Was there anything on the order page about this?0

I echo everyone else's thoughts - it's reasonable for them not to carry it upstairs. I live in a flat, when we had to get a new oven I actually made a point of raising it with the company I purchased from, as I recognised it would be unusual to have a kitchen upstairs. As it happened they made the arrangements so that they had the kit and the manpower there to get it upstairs...did you prewarn JL that it was upstairs? I can certainly see why you would get upset if you had specifically told them it was upstairs and they then backed out from taking it up for you.0

Was this coming direct from the manufacturer? JL delivered all of my kitchen equipment upstairs without question.Gone ... or have I?0

I bought a Rangemaster oven from JL a couple of years ago, and it was indeed delivered directly by Rangemaster. The issue is clearly Rangemaster's delivery policy, not JL's, who have delivered all manner of appliances to my house, and never objected once to taking them downstairs to the kitchen.
I didn't have the problem with the Rangemaster delivery as they put it in the ground-floor dining room, where it stayed until the builders fitting the new kitchen carried it downstairs!0 -
I love John Lewis and won't hear a word against them. Is a range cooker one of those double sized ones?
Perhaps the OP could arrange for a couple of younger friends and relatives to help the delivery person up th 13 steps with the cooker."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
