Samsung mobile to pc

I've recently bought a lead and software to connect my Samsung mobile to my pc (a Dell Dimension). The software seems to be loaded ok and the pc recognises when I connect my phone. However, I cannot up/download photos or upload any ring tones because there is no "COM port 4". The software tells me what to look for but it appears the new Dell pcs don't have any COM ports. Most people I have asked say they would expect the PC to just find away to work since the phone lead is connected to a USB port. Everything else that is connected through a USB port works fine.
Can anyone out there help me?

What version of windows are you using, and is it up to date?
The COM port shouldnt have anything to do with it tbh.0 -

I have Windows XP. The pc is only 6 months old.0 -
I've had a similar problem with usb devices on XP, my canon camera wasnt recognised.
Did you follow the instructions supplied with the phone?
I would assume it said to install the software, reboot, then plug in the phone to the usb port?
Have you tried another usb port?0 -

It's a Samsung E350E that I have. It says my phone is "offline" too. I'd be grateful to here what you were told. How can I pm you? Can you do it on here?0 -
yes I tried that. The instructions that came with the software said that I may have to look for a free COM port. So everything seemed to be going well until it wouldn't work.0

I know this sounds daft, but when you plug it in, ensure the phone is switched on.
If you're not prompted to install drivers, not always necessary, double click My Computer, and see if there are any removable devices listed.0 -
Yes it is listed as a removable device. The phone even charges up when it is plugged in and the pc makes a 'bleep' when the phone is connected/diconnected. Thanks for your suggestions by the way.0

Can you now transfer data to it?0
