I used to go to lidle as it was often half price -not sure if it still is though it has been a long time since I have been there!

Why is a person that handles your money called a broker?!
  • Keep your eyes open and you can often get it for free! Stand under the nearest apple tree - there are still some fruits attached. Look on the ground for windfalls :p

  • I love fruit and eat alot of it but only because of my local fruit and veg shop. It is very very cheap and often gets the rejects from the supermarkets - ive had marks and sparks and sainsburys stawberries from there. As long as u dont mind them being ripe i.e. eat them on the day u buy them the shop is a godsend. Do u have a market u can go to? Or hows about the veg boxes u can get delivered - may friend in work gets a massive organic fruit and veg box delivered for about £14 and im sure u can just opt for the fruit box instead

  • The value pre pack banannas in Tesco's are a bargain. You sometimes have to look for them. The loose one are £0.85/kg whereas you get 1.5kg for £0.58 in the valuepacks. I know some people think the value packs are lower quality but as far as I'm concerned a banana is a banana and I can't see the point in paying more for something that looks the same and tastes the same.

Lidl's as has been said are often on offer.

Always worth checking the Tesco's reduced section for end of date fruit. For oranges it's difficult to detect any depreciation in quality a week over the useby date. But you do need to check as if they are starting to go or you can see one is going mouldy or squishy it's best to leave them.

Can I ask all the folks who have got fallen apples under their trees to pick them up, put them in a box. Write FREE on the side and place them by the gate. It's such a waste letting them rot on the ground. I appreciate there's a limit to the amount you can eat/process yourself, so if your overwhelmed. GIVE THE REST AWAY.

I'd try local markets - usually cheapest but best to pick and choose as quality varies. Also a lot of people have fruit trees in their gardens and are over run with fruit at this time of year - they'll be delighted that someone is taking it from them.

Yes, and I'd try them just as they're closing, when the stallholders often slash prices...

or even leave carrier bags full of overrripe fruit (and overripe pears and plums are THE BEST) on the pavement when they leave! ;)

  • The other day i asked for a box of apples at the local market, they said it was £6, when i got home the side of the box said there was 13kg in the box and they were charging £1 per KG usually. I just had to count how many i actually got and there was 91

We do have a local market but everything seems to be really over priced, I have been getting some apples from a tree in my friends garden as she won't eat them??? (some people are strange) but it is the end of season for them. I think i will keep an eye out for offers at lidls. Thanks for all the replies.
