Skipton Building Society Questions and Answers

Dear Caroline
Thank you for your response and good gesture. I prefer not to reveal the branch code as I could accept that it is normal that everyone make a mistake.
I do not really mind as long as they do not do it on purpose. It is a disadvantage for me but it is not a big issue as very small amount of money.
ADINDAS
Hello again adindas,
If you're comfortable to leave it there then that's absolutely fine. However, just to be sure you won't have any similiar problems in the future I'll get a message out to all our branches for clarity.
Thanks again,

Hi
Why were no Skipton representatives present on the threads when the SVR was increased from the 3 points above base rates "guarantee" to 4.95%?
Currently special conditions, as defined by Skipton, are when the base rate is below 2.7%. Will Skipton be reconsidering this figure each year (especially in light of all forecasts stating that the base rate will stay low indefinitely)?
Hi danmck,
Good question.
Of course we were aware of the threads concerning the SVR increase – and our policy at the time was to respond via our website (a special page was set up for customers to do this: www.skipton.co.uk/svr) or if asked for press comment. I hope you’ll appreciate that with discussions taking place about one subject in so many different places, it made sense to have one central place for our responses. Also, many of the posts made were around specific cases and we would have been unable to comment on them without breaching data security.
I have also been told by Andrea that I am only permitted to post on this thread and not on other threads.
The exceptional circumstances that we use are also defined and monitored on a page within the SVR section of the website (http://www.skipton.co.uk/mortgages/svr/ourSvr.aspx). This is updated every month as it looks at Base Rate as well as the UK average Branch Instant Access savings rate, which is published each month on the Bank of England website. On this page it says that ‘We have promised to track the performance of these two tests and advise when they no longer prevail. When this happens, we will voluntarily reinstate the ceiling for customers who had the benefit of it under their mortgage terms, provided no other exceptional circumstances have arisen in the meantime.’
I hope this helps,

I understand its 12 payments of £500, but is there a best time of the month to open the regular savers account with skipton?0

Hi cloud_dog,
Thanks for asking!
So far I’m really enjoying the opportunity to talk to people who have something to say about Skipton. We like to understand and listen to peoples’ views and respond where it’s appropriate.
I’ve been very fortunate so far as people seem to like the fact there’s someone here to talk to, and everyone has been very welcoming (thank you!).

Don't bother turning up without an appointment!!
Having made a trip over to Lincoln to open my regular saver I was pleased to see the branch completely empty of customers and 3 representatives sat at desks waiting for me at 12.45pm
I told one of them I was their to open a regular saver she asked if I had made an appointment when I said I had not she told me they didn't open savings accounts without an appointment
I explained I had travelled especially to open the account she then said if I came back at 3.00pm she might see me to open an account. Her colleague said I could have a form and post it back to them with proof of my identity, which is what the trip to the branch was meant to avoid!!
I said I wouldn't bother and Skipton have lost a customer, surely this is not the policy in all branches is it??0 -
no, I have rung up to make an appointment at my local skipton branch which is in a william h brown unit, but she says just turn up. luckily its 10 mins on bus.0

Hi lkmc01,
Thanks for your question.
To make the most out of our regular saver account, open it on the first day of the month as interest is calculated daily and credited monthly.
I hope this helps,

Thats all well and good, but please caa you confirm WHY you use these tests and WHY failing them means you scrap a "guarantee" - and would an increase in base rate mean an increase in your SVR?0
