Parents Income Support Randomly Cut-Off?

Hi,

My mother called me a few days ago saying that she received a letter from the JC stating that my father won't be receiving income support any more, and that the decision can not be appealed. The letter was very basic, and had nothing but the above written on it.

[Please note, the income support comes under my fathers name - A few weeks ago he had to go abroad urgently because his parents conditions have worsen and there is no one to take care of them.]

I called up the number given, but they said they wanted to speak to my father, and not me. The problem is, I can't get through to him ever since last week, and my mothers worried sick as she won't be able to pay the rent or bills that have recently come through. I mean, as wrong as it seems to just randomly cut it off, without warning, currently my little brother and my older brother with a mental condition is staying with her, and she wouldn't be able to cope on the very small savings that she has.

Can anyone give us any advice? I was planning on taking her to the JC today, perhaps they could put her on some sort of temporary benefit, but I thought I'd just ask here before hand.

Any suggestions?

She can probably apply for a Crisis Loan to help her for now. How long has be been out of the country? There are rules about how long you can stay away and still get benefits for.

Thanks. No, it's only my father that's been out of the country for a few weeks, everyone else is here, and for the love of me I can't get a hold of him. I wish I had money to help out but I can barely feed myself.

Thanks for the advice on a Crisis Loan, I read on the Directgov site that they give you as much as they see fit, so hopefully they'll give enough for her to live for a few weeks.

I'll be picking her up in an hours time, so all the advice I can get is appreciated.

It is in his name, and he is not here, so it will stop. She might be able to make a new claim in her name (if she meets the criteria - ask someone while you are there).

For the crisis loan you get asked how much you need, they will then offer you a fraction of that (I got £60 to last me 3 weeks!) so make sure you ask for more than you need if you see what I mean.

Yeah, but I doubt thats the reason it got cut off. Regarding Income Support, I'm a little noobish on the matter. What do you have to be exactly to receive income support? If they'll put her on JSA, I'm pretty sure she'll get kicked out of the house in no time with the lousy JSA pay.

Jesus Christ... £60? I'll be sure to ask for a few million then :) Thanks for the help so far.

How old is your father? Does he still meet the conditions for Income Support?:
    • are between age 16 and the age they can get Pension Credit
    • have a low income
    • work less than 16 hours a week
    • aren't in full-time study (but there are some exceptions)
    • don't get Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance
    • don't have savings above £16,000
    • live in Great Britain

How long is he going to be out of the country?

On what grounds is he claiming IS and why is your mother having to use it to pay the rent?

His been out of the country for a few weeks, it could be why the IS was stopped, but I'm not sure.

My father claims IS due to his heart condition and problems with asthma. He had to urgently go abroad (2 weeks ago?) to care for his parents and they seem to have cut all pay to his name. (which my mother was using around the home.) If I'm not mistaken, the rent gets paid separately but is also under my fathers name, so I'm assuming its been cut off. (there's no way to verify this atm.)
  • I am pretty sure that his IS has been stopped because somehow or other the JC has been told/informed he is out of the country. Your mum needs to make a claim, (make a new claim) asap because it will take time to get any money, and she'll automatically have the first three days taken off it.

With your father incommunicado.., she'll have to say he's left her, which in a way (being incommunicado) he has. She can't manage with no income, as i would assume they don't have enough coming in to make it easy to pay back Crisis Loans/housing benefit arrears. The less of a payment gap there is, the better.

JSA is the same amount per week as IS.
