Car Headlights

My pet hate is driving with fog lights on when it's not foggy/snowing. It's nearly always the front fogs that people use when they shouldn't because they think they look 'cool'. Can't beat the set up some cars have whereby the rear fog lights have to be on for the front ones to work (I believe Peugeot/Citroen use this set up as both settings are on one stalk), as this acts as a deterrant. Most people wouldn't drive round all the time with their rear foglamps on, so why the fronts?
I've noticed Mercedes use these cornering lights, which to me would irritate if I was the driver of the Merc to be honest, and they appear to just be the foglights flashing on and off?0 -

I have a Merc and the cornering lights are indeed the front fogs which operate automatically at very low speeds. They are not an irritation to the driver but I'm wondering if they irritate other drivers?
The Merc's fog lights cannot be operated unless the main lights are on and also cannot be operated from the auto position whereby the lights come on when illuminations levels fall.0 -

Fiats also do the fog light cornering light.
In my opinion it is only good for low speed parking as it lights up small areas you may have missed like small walls or kerbs. Certainly does little harm.0 -
They irritate me, but that's just because I'm obsessive about these sorts of things. I really don't see the point in them to be honest. Can visibility really be that poor that aid is needed in order to corner safely? If it's the foglights themselves, do they not contravene vehicle lighting regulations when it's not foggy? Do they just serve to aid parking in the dark or something?
Yep, the cornering lights are to help parking in unlit places such as your drive (and to see round corners
They come on in queues of traffic. I've never noticed them on other cars.:)0 -
I have cornering lights on my car, they're actually built into the sides of the front bumper, very close to the front wheel, rather than using the fogs.
I generally find them useful when I'm out in the lanes here in the valleys at night and the satnav wants to send me down a footpath or over the edge of a cliff, I can just pull alongside and stick the indicator on and the route is nicely illuminated so I can check it before driving down.
I guess it's also handy for lane changes on larger unlit roads in case there is a pothole or someone has dropped their ladder.0 -

Is that really such a good idea? What if this tit-for-tat lighting warfare causes one or other of you to lose control of the vehicle temporarily?
So blasting my Maglite 2D LED (AKA the hollywood searchlight) at people tailgating me, would be a BAD thing?
