Warm Air Heating Help

We have a house built in 1983 with warm air heating & hot water, the hot water stopped working and British Gas said that you can no longer get parts and that we need to install a new boiler with radiators etc...

Is there anyway around this? Not only have they quoted £7,000 we like our warm air unit and do not want the disruption of having having a new system installed.

Any advice gratefully recieved

Thank you

Johnson & Starley still make the Warm air unit, What model is it? a component still might be available....what do british gas know about these systems?

Good evening: get a second opinion from a RGI recommended to you by a source you trust (ensure he/she has the qualification for warm air heating...will be listed on reverse side of the GSR ID card). Parts are often available despite what BG has to say and if the system is beyond repair an independent will be significantly cheaper than BG etal.

If your system is a Johnson & Starley they could advise....see the spares database etc on their website.

Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)
  • Get radiators, a modern boiler with hot water on demand and dump the hot air heating. Some disruption for sure but you'll get a far better all round product.

Good old BG what rip off merchants they are!

We were told this a while back in a previous house and its a load of rubbish, the parts for your system may be available after all and if not you can get a new warm air system for very little compared to the BG quote.

    Try http://www.johnsonandstarley.co.uk/Default.asp

We got our full replacement system from these people and had it installed for less than a grand, this was a while ago so the prices will have risen now though. If you find an independent fitter that can do it he can order the system and should get it at a cheaper price than if you yourself bought it direct. Hopefully you will be able to get the spares for your unit though. When i spoke to the peeps at J&S many of their customers had been told the same thing by BG.

Good luck and pop back to let everyone know how you get on.

The J&S site has a spares section and brings up Balmforth/MClary SD25-30 so you may be in luck. Without a part number you can`t search for the part that you need so i`d give them a ring tomorrow. They may even be able to recommend a fitter in your area.

A word of warning, see page 11 of HSE Bulletin, get someone who knows what they are doing and is fully aware.
