Just a quickie - can thieves detect a sat nav hidden in the car when it's switched off? I@m being told yes and no, and don't know which is right.
Thanks.
Thanks.

When a SatNav is turned off, i.e unplugged from your dash and turned off by it's main control on the Satnav then the simple answer is, No no one can detect it as it is not transmitting any signal0

Thanks sassy-one. Glad, because I never remember to stick it in my bag :-)******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0

Most of the times thieves can tell you have a sat nav because they see the marks on the inside of the window left when you put it away.
I don't know what signal they could pick up, it is a receiver not a transmitter.0 -
No unless you have the tell tale suction cup marks on the windscreen. However, as a significant proportion of people have them, it's a good bet there's one inside should they wish to put your window through
They are a receiver not a transmitter!!

Mine is left in the car, out of display somewhere.
I don't really bother as mine isn't a high end one, was only £150-ish and my car insurance covers theft of it.
Hope that helps0 -
Unless you have a high spec sat nav that connects to the interweb, there is no way that thieves could detect it even if it was turned on. As has been said, it is a purely passive piece of equipment.0

Real harden criminals may have a GPRS receiver to detect a signal, however such a device would cost £££'s.
Other than the tell tale signs on the windscreen, to which you could have removed the SatNav anyway, there is no other way.
My cup stays on the windscreen and never comes off, as already said, my insurance covers theft of my SatNav with no loss of no claims0 -
loss of ncb isn't particularly relevant, if you ever need to make a claim for a window and a satnav, don't be surprised if your premium gets hiked on renewal.!!

I remember a story about a hard up student who's car had been broken into a few times and so had resorted to sticking a cardboard sign inside his window that said........."No CD Player , No Sat- Nav , No Valuables."
He came back to his car after a days shopping to find the side window put through and someone had scribbled underneath ......" Just checking"0
