People should think about school holidays, sickness, inset days and the like before having children.

We as women are tiold in the modern world we can have it all. The ideal family with polite shiney clean children doing wonderful thing in this weird new concept of quality time together and our ideal career but in reality we cant and you have to make choices.
If you want a career then great but you have to accept that your child will spend more time with your child care provider than you and you will have to pay for it one way or another.

    Absolutely, well said.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Because doing a good job of bringing up a family is as important/more important for the country as working.

what so by virtue of having a child someone should be able to sit on income support having the tax payer support them until the child is 16 so they can be a good mummy?
What about showing and teaching the work ethic to those children by doing what they can to support themselves.
The welfare state should be a safety net to aid you in your hour of need not a life style or career.

I have no problem with income support being paid until a child reaches school age but i see no reason why a lone parent cant then get some sort of job and still be a good parent and bring up their children to be worthwhile members of society.

Morgan-Ree - what the parents of my minded kids do during the holidays is that I will have them for 2 or 3 days a week during all holidays, and family members (or the parents themselves) do the rest. Then, the child gets a break from me each holiday - and gets to spend some time at home/grandparents etc. If you are planning to send your child to the c/minder for the whole of the summer holidays, please don't come unstuck with her deciding that that is when she is planning her summer holiday herself.

Are you saying that keeping a home well and bringing up a family shows no work ethic?

We could use the same argument to scrap all universal benefits, including child benefit, old age pensions, the NHS, the courts, the police, the fire service, etc. etc. etc.

This whole "Work is good" stance is very puritanical, but we are going through a puritanical age.
