Best way to run a combi gas system

Options
Hi
advise needed please
just had a new combi installed and all rads fitted with thermostat valves .
Is it better to run the boiler 24 hours on a low setting ie 3 (its a worster 28i) or to use the timer to have it switched off when in bed or out of the house .
OH is at home most of the day .

I remember many years ago liveing in a mobile home with solid fuel heating it was better #(cheaper) to keep it going on low for 24hrs rather than letting it go out .

Also have a log burner which will be commisioned next weekend so that should help

There's no point having heating on when your in bed, or out and about, waste of money, waste of gas and, needless wear and tear on the boiler. You mention all rads have trv's, one rad at least should be non trv, normally entrance hall, this is to elevate pressure on pump.

Once you have stove in and fired up, there will be very little need for using gas at all (depending on various circumstances of course)

  • yes all rads have tvr except the one in the linen cupboard which did have the cylinder in it .
just wondered if the heat pumped into the house by having it on all the time eleviated the need to reheat the cooling air in the house ..

Good move having non trv rad installed in airing cupboard.

I would imagine if house if well insulated, from cold to reasonable living temperature will take no time at all.

Mark my words, once stove is fired up, it'll be T-shirts indoors for winter :j

  • Why not try it.. Take a meter reading and leave it on for a few days and then try it again on a timed basis. You will be able to see which is more efficient. If you are out during the day though I would go timed. An alternative may be to use an intelligent thermostat.

You can program the thermostat to set different temperatures per day depending on time. An advantage of this is saving fuel and protecting your house against potential burst pipes etc when you are out / asleep and provide heat when needed.
