Great advice and info thank you all. I do hide the laptop frequently but some of the homework lately has been where she has had to find out info, so she has needed it.

steve1980 what you have recommended looks quite straighforward,I`m going to wait until she is at school tomorrow to sort this. Is it easy to unblock when she has earned it back?

if theres away to block it from within the modem settings that would be best, but may still be able to access through a proxy

Not to burst the bubble but if she really wants to use facebook and is determined theres not much you can do. Instead of doing homework she'll now be trying to bypass any blocks you've put on the computer and will likely succeed.
  • pull the router out of the phone socket while she homeworks

it is simple you are admin make your daughter a sub account password the admin account and install windows live essentials specifically this bit but update the other programs too. (win vista or 7 required)

then simply set it to block programs and set access times and (if it can block websites) I dont believe in cutting all access 100% of the time but when she really has to do her homework then it is a must.

if you cannot block websites with that then add the sites to the router with custom block times.

like the OP says the daughter needs to use the internet at certain times for her homework

how about tell her to do her homework downstairs but she stays off facebook and this way you could keep an eye on her

Doesn't really matter what you do, kids are so IT savvy these days they know how to unblock any restrictions you put on the PC.
Only way is to unplug the router.

  • Another vote for Open DNS.
I have a 14yr old and had exactly the same issues. Use Open DNS and despite a few temper tantrums and hissy fits because 'you are just ruining my life' all seems resolved. OpenDNS reporting on websites visited etc is also pretty good.
