Daughter is 14 and everytime laptop is on to do her homework is spending her time on facebook, of course whenever I check it looks like homework is getting done but its not...and the little bit of rubbish she is producing for school is taking hours!!. I don`t want to completely delete it at this stage but please is there any way I can lock this (I am the administrator on the laptop if that helps) or can I put back parental controls or whatever to sort this.
Any advice would be very much appreciated as I am completely loosing it with her (she also thinks I`m stupid and I don`t know what she is doing). I did my homework in the library - bring back the good old days!!!
Many thanks

Is the laptop on xp or vista or 7, oh and how does it connect to the net ? via a router by any chance
if your sure her work is being affected then yes try blocking facebook and see what happens0 -
So glad I'm not the only parent with that problem. My daughter is 17 now and she too has various windows open on her PC whilst "doing homework". I have talked to her and basically said that I will disconnect her internet while she's doing school work.
We have a BT hub - her bedroom internet is disconnected automatically at 21.00. On a weekend when she's up there "working", I often unplug the upstairs connection.
I myself got a Facebook account so I can keep an eye on what she's doing on there.
Since she has an Android phone with unlimited internet (giffgaff), she's not exactly cut off from cyberspace.
I think we have to accept that they all do it - I'm sure I would have been the same at her age all I had on was Fabulous Radio 208!
As long as school work is not suffering, you probably shouldn't get so stressed about it.0 -
Look up opendns
This is a method of blocking access to selected sites, or filtering on keywords.
If it seems the right option for you, then people here can help explain how it should be set up.0 -
You could be her "friend" on fb and see when she has posted things...;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Balance 1st November '09 = mortgage paid off with £1903 left over. Title deeds are now ours.0 -
You do know, presumably, that you can go 'offline' on FB and still see everything (except who else is online)? So you could be her friend and she could be looking at FB but you wouldn't know it (and vice versa), if that option is of interest to you.0

Thank you all for the replies, her laptop runs on Vista and we have a router in the lounge which runs my desktop in back bedroom and laptop wherever it may be!
I`ll check that link kabayiri (just got to pop out) will look as soon as I get
DCFC79 how do I block it please? maybe this might be a good option first - block it for a while and see how it goes.
thanks0 -
This may sound silly but I am being serious:
Can you not just 'confiscate' the laptop and mobile (if it has internet access) while she works? Unless she really requires a laptop for work, which I don't think is the case depending on the subject (eg. maths). You can return it to her when she has done all her work! (Although she could lie and say she's done them all...) I'm sure if you stop facebook for instance, she still could chat with others using msn messneger - which I think is now linked to facebook? (I may be wrong).0 -
I have this issue too! I block facebook via her firefox browser but haven't figured out how to do MSN yet as it only blocks the main site and not the messenger site? . I can't do it on the modem as I want access to these sites!
Taking the laptop away or turning off the internet access can't be done as she needs the online access for studying.0 -
