  • I haven't had any disgusting jobs but certainly soul destroying ones.

I was once sent by my recruitment agency to cover reception/all admin duties in a small office. They built me up for it so I just went for it.

I didn't know how to do ANYTHING. I couldn't put people through to the engineers as I didn't have a clue how to use the phone so VIP's were cut off a lot. Every day was an absolute embarrasing nightmare. The best bit was when I answered the phone and FORGOT the name of the company. It turned out to be the director and he had to remind me of the company name.

I did it for the required time of 20 days (felt like FOREVER) only because my mum would have killed me if I quit.
Trying to spread calmness, understanding and optimism on MSE :)

    I've had a few.

Worst one - Distribution centre for major electrical retailer. Had to ride an order picker machine round the factory with 2 pallets on back (that bit was ok) pick out boxes that the computer told me to, stack them - got covered in box dust a LOT and then I had to wrap them with shrink wrap. That was a nightmare, I'm only short so couldn't do tall ones. I also had a lot of difficulty getting pallets onto and off the forks. All this whilst wearing too big steal capped boots, a hard hat and a high vis jacket. I got so thirsty my lips were cracking for the whole 6 weeks! Also it was 6am to 2pm and the agency picked me at 5am! I was 18! Not the best at getting up, so I slept in at least once a week! Also you weren't allowed to bring your mobile into work in case you might have stolen it! Mine was ancient! And they had random searches as you left. Although £6.50 an hour 5 years ago was good.

Cambridge Diet production place - was quite awful only cause the managers didn't like me for some reason, they let me go after 4 weeks as I said I talked too much! I never talked apart from in canteen and going back out onto floor!

This office in london - first ever job in London, spent 3 days in this office I didn't really knew what they did. I was the only white girl (not being racist btw), and I felt like an outsider, I couldn't understand their hand writing to type it up and they looked down on me like I was an idiot! Told the agency I wasn't going back there! They even treated their 14 year old work experience girl better!

A call center for one of the big betting shops

    Nightmare

Mainly it was the customers. Most days included a number of !!!!ed off customers. It was always your fault. They could f and lined at us and we could do nothing but take it. I remember when it snowed and all the races were cancelled-we had people complain about that as if it was our fault.

Then there were the hours, i worked 37.5 hours p/w yet two days i would have 11 hour shifts. They were terrible in HR.

I once worked behind the counter for a high street bookie taking bets, settling payouts etc etc.

The work itself was fairly uneventful, but I felt emotionally unclean doing it.

Many of the customers were clearly gambling addicts and by working behind the counter I was enabling their addiction.

It's easy to say that if I wasn't doing the job then someone else would do it instead and that's true, but I was glad not to be a part of it anymore once I left.

I asked for one guy to be reviewed because he was clearly out of it, his registered address was a mental home :( Customer services tried to close his account but the bigwigs kept reinstating it as he spent so much. They turned on me just before i was there a year and got rid of me but that's another story.

I havent had any really sould destroying jobs, but my DH had the job of cleaning out returned wheelie bins from the council by hand that had been stood in the yard for a couple of months. There was old nappies, concealed rotting food etc in there. Because we needed the money he never told me how awful it was till he left nor that he used to go to work and often throw up from the stench and then return to the job.
Not until that day did I realise how much he loves his family :) but I still feel awful that he did that job for 18 months without telling me so I could get him out of there

  • All of them.

  • I also had a job in the laundry of a mental hospital for a few months as a teenager. Sorting out huge bags of urine soaked sheets all morning was not pleasant but we had such a laugh. First one to find a "malteaser" in their bag was the winner every day - often we found much worse. lol
  • Just reading this thread has given me sadistic chuckle :D

In a recent job interview for some cushy temp work, the manager hired me purely on the basis of the number of crap jobs I had had. Her words were to the effect of, "I can't imagine anything we throw at you being as bad as what you'll experience here!"

By doing these jobs you are showing grit and determination, highly sought-after traits in any employee.

  • I've had a few!

Worst by far was admin for some cmputer company. God it was awful. Making tea for the office queens, data entry and filling. On a really good day I was assigned the task of shreading

Everyone that worked there was atleast 20 years older than me and were actually pretty horrible loking back at it now.
I managed to last 6 months before jacking it in. Not one person said bye to me on my last day! Not even ah well see ya!

I bumped into my manager from there a few months ago.
She was wearing a cleaners unifrom, moping up a spill in Tesco
Of course I just HAD to go over an say hi. Told her the uniform suited her much better than her old 80s style power suits :D
