Gave my Itouch a bath - help!

It's probably too late to save it but there may be a chance.
There are several websites which give instructions on how to take an itouch apart
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPod-Touch-4th-Generation-Teardown/3562/1
is one of them.
Take the covers off as shown and leave in a warm airing cupboard for a long time. Don't do anything more than taking the covers off and don't touch the circuit board of components.
When you think it's dry leave it in the airing cupboard for a few more days, trying it if it's still wet will only damage it more and high tech electronics take time to dry out.
Then charge it before trying to do anything else.
I've rescued several radios and phones this way from sea water. Although some needed extra work with everything taken apart and washed in distilled water in ESD conditions.
Good luck0 -
Thank you all so much for taking the trouble to reply to my post. I am afraid I must have "killed" it myself - first thing I did was to plug it in and switch on! What a plonker, why didn't I come on here first? Oh well, we learn from our mistakes, I suppose, but I am very sad, as it was a present from my son. I will go into the Apple store and see what they can offer, if anything,
Thanks again,
M

Hi I stumbled across ur post because I just dropped my iPod into a bowl of water. Did u go to the Apple store then? What was the outcome?
Sorry for all the questions, its just that the nearest Apple store to me is actually quite far away, I just wanted to make sure if it's worth making the journey0 -

nope you won't get anywhere they can tell it has water damage, they may offer you a refurb product to buy.
if it has just happened now do what I said further up this thread. ie put it under a warm lamp for a 1-2 days and do not try to turn on0 -
Apple and some othe manufacturers have moisture indicators built in all over the device - their job is to permanently change colour if they even sniff water, and so void the warranty. There was a minor fuss about one design they had which was very exposed and even the humidity of holding them could put the warranty at risk! So they will know for sure that the phone/ device has got wet, and will know for sure to invalidate the warranty, so there is little harm in trying to dry it out for yourself.
Open any backs etc to allow free venting where possible, and just keep it warm, no battery, and in a dry place for a few days. Rice may absorb some moisture if it can, but without the warm dry air to evaporate the moisture it won't do much. Only when ultra dry should you try powering back up in any sense ( including charging!) or you're at risk of killing it beyond economical repair!0 -

It was already on when I dropped it, and when I took it out I tried turning it off but the screen wasn't responding.... and then it shut itself down. I'm drying it out, but before I looked it up online I plugged it into the computer  Obviously the PC wouldn't recognise it
My one isn't under warranty anyway, its a 1st Gen, but if I take it in will they offer me a new/refurb for a lower price?0 -
I once put mine through the washing machine, and then tumble drier at uni
when i went back to collect my clothes i could see it staring at me through the glass. I put it on the radiator and nothing happened. Then a few days later it came back to life! The screen has gradually faded so now there is no display but still works fine

I doubt it, the world is full of dead old electronics, but you could always try!0 -
I finally managed to get to our local Apple Store - got a BRAND NEW, not a refurb, Itouch and it cost me £75, with a full year's warranty. An expensive "bath", but I am delighted to have it back and less than the cost of a more up to date one.
Thanks again one and all and a :xmassign: to you!

a new 4th gen one? (the one with the camera), even if it isn't that is a sweet deal you got.0 -
i know OP has sorted it but for info a touch can be rescued after water damage.i have done several after purchasing cheap off fleabay.
if caught early and turned off leave in rice for several days in a ziplock bag do not put near a heat source to dry it that leaves more of a residue on the logik board components as the water evaporates.
if that does not work the touch will need taking apart so board can be soaked in rubbing alcohol and brushed clean with a soft brush and then leave it to air dry.
a common fault after water damage is the backlight in lcd stops working normally a £6 lcd will fix the problem.0
